| Abstract | Alimony. Few words in the English language provoke a more immediate, negative, visceral response: fear; revulsion; anger; envy; suspicion; cynicism. Arguments over alimony, not uncommon, seem inevitably to include accusations of avarice, sloth, pay-back, chauvinism, and involuntary servitude. Perhaps it was always so, at least after outright divorce became a possibility in the law and the search began for a cogent contemporary rationale to anchor the ancient alimony award. But surely no more so than in California, a community-property jurisdiction, since the advent of no-fault divorce. |
