San Diego City Attorney Jan I. Goldsmith, '76 JD, and CleanTECH Co-Founder James T. Waring, '73 JD, '04 MA, are receiving the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award at USD's 2013 Alumni Honors.
The cost is $75 per person and includes awards program and starlit soiree. The recent alumni discount for graduates after 2002 is $55 per person. Register online.

This spring, USD School of Law will be offering free training on deposition taking and defending skills. This training mirrors a National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) course. The NITA program charges $2,000 per person, but our training is free to alumni. The training sessions span over three dates and is limited to 32 law alumni. In Memoriam: Professor C. Hugh Friedman, 1931-2013
Casil Hugh Friedman, a prominent San Diego business attorney, legal advocate and USD School of Law's longest-standing faculty member, passed away on January 29, due to a prolonged illness. He was 81.
"Hugh's passing is a terrible loss both to USD School of Law and the San Diego community," said Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo. "During his 55-year association with USD School of Law, Hugh was beloved by his faculty colleagues and inspired generations of students. As a lawyer, he compiled an exemplary record of service at the local, state and national level, always giving generously of his time and talents. Hugh was a trusted advisor to his clients, a great teacher and mentor, a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and a talented jazz musician—in all a wonderfully vibrant man. Hugh lived a very rich life and leaves an enduring legacy." Read more.
In Memoriam: Attorney and Former USD School of Law Professor Harvey Levine
Harvey Levine, well-known San Diego attorney and former USD School of Law professor, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, following a lengthy illness. He was 68.
A story in the San Diego Union-Tribune reported, "Attorney Harvey Levine represented the little guys, those fighting insurance companies that refused to pay claims. He also took on some big guys as clients, including a former Chargers player and the San Diego Padres. Harvey had a highlight-reel legal career that included work outside the courtroom as a professor at USD School of Law and a stint as legal liaison for the United Nations in Italy." Read more.
Tyler Krentz Wins 2013 Paul A. McLennon, Sr., Honors Moot Court Competition
On February 27, USD School of Law second-year student Tyler Krentz won the 10th Annual Paul A. McLennon Sr., Honors Moot Court Competition.
The annual intramural event provides USD law students an opportunity to develop their brief-writing skills by testing them in an open and rigorous competition. The final round oral argument was presided over by J. Clifford Wallace, Senior Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; Louisa Porter, Magistrate Judge (ret.), U.S. District Court, Southern District of California; and Alex McDonald, Associate Judge, California Court of Appeal, Fourth District. Professor Fellmeth: $1.6 Billion Owed to California Consumers Is "Long Overdue"
USD School of Law Price Professor of Public Interest Law Robert Fellmeth was quoted in the San Diego Union-Tribune on February 19, providing expert legal commentary about a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission administrative law judge's ruling that California utility customers are owed about $1.6 billion from energy wholesalers that manipulated markets at the outset of the state's 2000-01 energy crisis. Law Professors Honored by USD for Academic Achievements
Three USD School of Law professors are being honored for their outstanding achievements and contributions to their discipline: Professor Laurence Claus; Professor Lesley McAllister; and Professor Walter Heiser. Awards will be formally bestowed at the Fall Convocation on September 13. Read more.
USD School of Law Welcomes San Diego County High School Mock Trial Teams
USD School of Law welcomed four mock trial teams from high schools across San Diego county during the month of January, allowing teams to practice their legal skills in Grace Courtroom. Students competed in the 2012-13 San Diego County Mock Trial Competition February 26 - March 2, at the San Diego Downtown Courthouse. The local competition is part of the California Mock Trial Program—a statewide academic competition in which high school students compete at the county, state and national levels. The program attracts more than 500 students from San Diego County and 8,000 students statewide. The winner of the San Diego competition will go on to compete in the state competition held March 22-24, in Riverside, Calif. Read more.

Herzog Endowed Scholar and Professor of Law Orly Lobel was named one of "The 50 Sharpest Minds of Israel" by The Marker Magazine, Israel's leading business journal. Featured in the magazine's January 2013 issue, Professor Lobel discusses her career choice, connections to Israel, upcoming book, and current research. Read more.
EPIC Featured in Inside USD
USD School of Law's nonprofit Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) runs on Director Scott Anders' passion for Energy. Scott drives a fuel-efficient car, consciously lives in an energy-friendly home equipped with solar panels and, since October 2005, has been at the helm of EPIC's important academic and research projects.
"I'm an energy geek, admittedly," he stated. "When I see stuff, I see energy and I see carbon. Everything we have and do basically has embedded energy in it."
So it's no surprise that Scott can weigh in on the inaugural USD One Challenge—a campus-wide awareness and solution-oriented community project focused this spring on issues concerning the environment, specifically wasteful production and consumption. Read more.

Paul Robinson '73 Named San Diego Daily Transcript Top Influential
USD School of Law Board of Visitors member Paul Robinson, '73, has been named by the San Diego Daily Transcript as one of San Diego's Top Influentials. Chosen from a list of 400 nominees, the Transcript editorial board selected the list of finalists, which includes of leaders from key San Diego industries such as real estate, construction, technology and legal services. Paul is a partner at Hecht Solberg Robinson Goldberg and Bagley LLP, and specializes in land use issues. Read more.

Introducing New Associate Director of Development
Debbie Rider '84
In February, Debbie Rider, '84, joined USD School of Law's Office of Development and Alumni Relations department as the new associate director of development. Debbie is responsible for helping to enhance the law school's fundraising efforts. In her role, she manages the Law Firm Challenge, the Board of Visitors and supports major gifts efforts.
Debbie has extensive experience as both a professional and volunteer fundraiser. Her professional experience includes work for the Children's School and Ursuline Academy. She has also held leadership volunteer fundraising roles for the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA, Girl Scouts, Del Mar Pines Foundation for Education and the Junior League of San Diego. In addition, she has served as a volunteer on USD School of Law's Dean's Advisory Committee on External Affairs.
