Participate in the Student Bar Association's 2009-2010 Alumni Interactive ProgramThe USD School of Law Student Bar Association (SBA) has launched the 2009-2010 Alumni Interactive program. This program provides law students with opportunities to interact with USD law alumni, network with the legal community and refine their future career goals. USD law alumni who are not currently practicing law and pursuing other exciting careers are also encouraged to participate. The SBA invites you to host an activity of your choice in October or November. Casey Gerry, Hecht Solberg, and the Office of the Attorney General Join the Law Firm Challenge
The law school is pleased to welcome Casey Gerry, Hecht Solberg, and the Office of the Attorney General to the Law Firm Challenge. Juan Ordaz '07, Fernando Landa '06, '08, and Marissa Bejarano '01, '04, respectively, will lead outreach efforts to fellow alumni. Challenge volunteers provide other USD Law alumni at their firm or organization with monthly updates on events, law school news and volunteer opportunities while garnering their support for the law school. "I'm excited to be leading the Challenge efforts at the AG's office," said Marissa. "I think the Challenge is a great way to connect the alumni in our office, increase our visibility at USD and support our alma matter." "The Law Firm Challenge presents the San Diego legal community with another opportunity to champion the University of San Diego School of Law," said Fernando. "Hecht Solberg is excited about continuing its support of USD through this terrific program."
The Law Firm Challenge is a peer outreach program that reconnects alumni to the law school and encourages alumni support of the Law Annual Fund. Law firms, companies and organizations with three or more alumni are invited to participate. USD School of Law Welcomes Michael Barone for the 2009 Bowes-Madison Lecture SeriesJoin USD School of Law for the sixth presentation of the Joan E. Bowes-James Madison Distinguished Lecture Series. Michael Barone, senior political analyst, Washington Examiner; contributor, Fox News Channel; and resident fellow, American Enterprise Institute, will deliver a keynote address titled, "American Politics: Are we in a New Era?"

Pugh Lecture in Tax Law and PolicyUSD School of Law is pleased to announce the creation of the endowed Richard Crawford Pugh Lecture in Tax Law and Policy in honor of USD Distinguished Professor of Law Richard C. Pugh.
Before coming to USD, Pugh was a professor at Columbia Law School, a deputy assistant U.S. attorney general, tax division, and a partner at the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. In honor of his long and illustrious career, USD will invite a distinguished practitioner, judge or government official who has played a significant role in shaping U.S. and international tax policy as the annual Pugh Lecturer. The inaugural lecture will be given on April 16, 2010, by Eric Solomon, an outstanding practitioner and public servant who has made lasting contributions to tax policy as treasury assistant secretary for tax policy and IRS assistant chief corporate counsel. In September 2009, he rejoined the national tax practice of Ernst & Young's Washington, D.C. office. Moot Court Team Takes Second Place at National Civil Rights and Liberties Moot Court CompetitionUSD School of Law Moot Court Team members Kristy Hewitt and Randy Freeman edged out 24 other law schools from across the country to take second place at the third annual Emory University School of Law Civil Rights and Liberties Moot Court Competition. Randy took home the Best Oralist award for the entire field of more than 50 competitors. The USD School of Law Moot Court Team is currently ranked 13th in the country for the 2009 competition season.
"We could not be more pleased with the performance of our students at this prestigious and challenging national moot court competition," said Kris Panikowski, moot court advisor and full-time faculty member. "Brief writing and oral advocacy skills play an equal role in a competitorís success at this tournament. We feel fortunate that Kristy and Randy were able to use the skills that they learned while studying at USD."
