West’s Regional Reporters provide access to state cases. Each reporter is accompanied by a digest that allows researchers to find cases that address a particular legal issue.

Federal Caselaw Research

West’s Federal Digest is a large compilation of Caselaw summaries, also called squibs. Organized by West’s Digest Topic and Key Number system, the Digest allows researchers to find federal cases that address a particular legal issue.

California Caselaw Research

West’s California Digest is a large compilation of Caselaw summaries, also called squibs. Organized by West’s Digest Topic and Key Number system, the Digest allows researchers to find all California state cases and federal cases arising out of California that address a particular legal issue.

United States Code Annotated (USCA) and United States Code Service (USCS)

Federal Legislative Research

United States Code Annotated (published by West) and the United States Code Service (published by Lexis) are annotated versions of the United States Code. The annotated codes follow the same title and section arrangement as the official Code but include annotations to judicial decisions, law review articles, legal encyclopedias, American Law Reports, and other secondary sources.

West’s Annotated California Code andDeering’s California Codes (published by Lexis) are annotated versions of the California State Code. In addition to the actual text of the statute, you'll find summaries of law review articles, legal encyclopedias, American Law Reports, and other secondary sources.

American Law Reports (ALR)

American Law Reports video

Located at LRC Reading Room KF 132

ALR is a set of Annotations. Each annotation provides researchers with a representative case summary addressing a specific legal issue, accompanied by secondary analysis and references to additional Caselaw and other sources. American Law Reports have been issued in 8 series: ALR, ALR 2d – ALR 6th, ALR Fed., and ALR Fed.2d and include an Annotation History Table to identify relevant annotations published in later series.

These legal encyclopedias are excellent starting points for legal research.  They provide a brief review of the law and key terminology in the area, which can help you create targeted and more relevant keyword searches.
