The University of San Diego is proud to announce Fowler Park and Cunningham Field has been awarded LEED ® Silver Certification for New Construction and Major Renovations. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.
"Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The University of San Diego Fowler Park project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come."
Fowler Park -- named in honor of San Diego Padres Executive Chairman and USD Board of Trustees Chairperson Ron Fowler and his wife, Alexis, who generously gave the lead gift -- is a dream come true for a baseball program that has been one of the top NCAA Division I teams on the west coast the past decade. The $13.8 million project, which was constructed in just 38 weeks, greatly enhances the architecture, facilities, amenities, and overall baseball experience for the USD Toreros.
"LEED Certification was one of our project goals from the very start of the design process," stated Josh Lawrence, USD Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities and Operations. "Achieving LEED Silver is another wonderful example of the collaborative work that the University of San Diego and it's partners, Populous and Turner Construction, were able achieve while delivering an outstanding facility."
Populous, the ballpark's architect, and Turner Construction made Fowler Park's beautiful layout and design possible. Completed in February 2013, the state-of-the-art ballpark is more than just a playing field. Highlights of the facility include a grand entry archway detailed in 16th century Spanish Renaissance architecture that connects the ballpark with nearby campus architecture. This leads fans onto the McGee Family Entry Deck which gives spectators a spectacular view of the entire ballpark, and once inside the park, fans never lose sight of the playing field.
Fowler Park has 1,700 permanent seat-backs, but can be expanded to hold 3,000 fans with designed temporary seating areas. The majority of seating sections have only 14 rows, providing fans with excellent and intimate sightlines no matter where they are in the ballpark. All seats are protected by a Dyneema Backstop Netting that is supported on wire from foul pole to foul pole and provides an unobstructed view for all spectators.
This, along with a 25'x16' digital ICG scoreboard, a state-of-the-art green Musco Lighting System with eight light standards, and sunken team dugouts, makes Fowler Park equipped to host NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals. The state-of-the-art clubhouse for players and coaches that rivals MLB standards, includes a spacious locker room, player study lounge, coaches' offices, athletic training room, conference room, soft-toss area and mud room.
Additionally, there are two luxury suites with high end finishes and indoor/outdoor seating, a press box area for radio/TV/game operations, public restrooms, concessions and ticket office. The Torero Deck, which sits on top of the clubhouse, has a synthetic turf miniature baseball field for kids to run around on during the contests. With views to the west of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, it is also a fabulous spot for receptions and group gatherings.
USD selected Turner Construction Company to manage the construction of Fowler Park partly due to its commitment to green building. Turner was ranked by Engineering News-Record as the top construction firm in the nation for Green Building. Fowler Park and Cunningham Field was constructed with local and recycled materials, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and a sustainable site design.
Fowler Park and Cunningham Field achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
