Paige Haber-Curran '11 Named Emerging Scholar

Paige Haber-Curran, PhD ‘11
Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator
Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education, and School Psychology
College of Education, Texas State University

Paige Haber-Curran, PhD '11,  was named an Emerging Scholar by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) for her research on leadership development among college students. The award recognizes individuals who are contributing to research in student affairs and higher education.

Haber-Curran has published 9 book chapters and 12 refereed journal articles and is co-authoring the second edition of textbooks, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Facilitation & Activity Guide, and Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Student Workbook.

Immediately following her graduation from the doctoral program in Leadership Studies at the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES), Haber-Curran became the sole full-time faculty member and program coordinator for the student affairs in higher education graduate program in the College of Education at Texas State University.

“I just jumped right in, and what’s great is that I was fresh out of my PhD program, but everyone trusted that I was here for a good reason and had a lot to contribute. I’ve had the opportunity to really learn a lot but they also hired me to get the program to where it needs to be.”

Combining her own experience with support from adjunct faculty, the dean, and the university, Haber-Curran has grown the program in size, strength, and diversity. Just two years ago, the program included 30 total students, and a large majority of the students were from Texas. The newest group of students to matriculate drew eight of its 18 new students from outside the state.

Through her doctoral studies and graduate assistantship in the Leadership minor in SOLES, Haber-Curran says her understanding of leadership and leadership education were both greatly broadened on theoretical, conceptual, and personal levels. “The PhD program opened my eyes up to the broad field of leadership studies while simultaneously allowing me to narrow my focus on leadership higher education and student affairs. I apply what I learned on a daily basis -- both professionally and personally.”

Haber-Curran has also developed a consulting business for individuals, groups, and organizations, which she will continue to pursue. “I see organizations -- and myself -- differently and more completely as a result of my experience in SOLES, and that has helped me with confidence working with different organizations in a speaking and program development capacity.”
