The Music Department of the University of San Diego announces its second annual solo competition for young singers born after Jan. 1988 (age 26 or under) to be soloists of the 2014 Messiah Sing-Along and Play-Along concerts, which will be held on Friday, December 12 at 7:30pm and repeated on Sunday, December 14 at 2pm in the Founders Chapel on the University of San Diego campus.
Winners of the competition will sing the solo arias for Soprano, Alto/Counter-Tenor, Tenor, and Bass from Part I of the Messiah. In addition, applicants may select up to two additional arias from Parts II or III for the competition. A cash prize of $400 will be awarded to the best soloist. Other winners will receive a cash prize of $200 each. The awards will be presented at the performance on December 14.
The dress rehearsal with the orchestra will be held in the Founders Chapel on Tuesday, December 9 from 7:15 to 9:15pm. Winners who cannot attend both performances and the dress rehearsal will be replaced. All applicants are invited to come sing with the chorus at both performances.
The competition will be held on the University of San Diego campus on Saturday, October 25. An accompanist will be provided for the competition.
Last day to submit the application will be Friday, September 26. The application form must be submitted electronically. A non-refundable application fee of $20 must be mailed and postmarked Friday, September 26 or earlier.
The Annual Messiah Sing-Along and Play-Along at the University of San Diego is a fund-raising event for the benefit of the James H. Kolar Amadeus Music Fund. The performance will be accompanied by the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Angela Yeung. Mozart’s orchestration of Handel’s Messiah will be used for the performance.
