USD School of Law Hosts International Conference on Judicial Independence

San Diego (August 6, 2013) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law will host the International Conference on Judicial Independence on Friday, August 9, through Sunday, August 11, 2013.

Sponsored by the International Association of Judicial Independence and World Peace and in collaboration with the Centre for Public Law at the University of Cambridge and the Faculty of Law at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the conference aims to provide an update on international standards of judicial independence around the world and to explore challenges facing the judiciary in both the national and international spheres.

Each year, a different academic institution serves as conference sponsor and host, welcoming U.S. and international judges, scholars, and attorneys to participate in discussions on creating and maintaining a culture of judicial independence.

The theme of this year’s conference is Rule of Law and World Peace. The conference is being coordinated by Maimon Schwarzschild, Professor of Law at University of San Diego School of Law; Shimon Shetreet, Greenblatt Chair of Public and International Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Visiting Distinguished Scholar in Comparative Law at University of San Diego School of Law; and Christopher Forsyth, Professor of Public and International Law at Cambridge University. The participants this year will include leading members of the bench and bar and scholars from around the world.

Sir Louis Blom-Cooper Q.C., Bencher of the Middle Temple and former London Deputy High Court Judge, will give a keynote address.

This conference is part of an ongoing project under the aegis of the Centre for Public Law at Cambridge University and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. The latest publication arising from the proceedings of recent conferences has just been published: The Culture of Judicial Independence: Conceptual Foundations and Practical Challenges (Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 2012) (Shimon Shetreet & Christopher Forsyth, eds.).
