International Students and Scholars: Health Insurance and Immunizations

Health Insurance Information for International Students and Scholars

International students and visiting scholars at the University of San Diego School of Law must select one of the following two options to fulfill the health insurance requirement:

  1. Enroll in the University International Health Insurance Plan, coordinated through USD's provider Gallagher Koster, or
  2. Waive participation in the university-sponsored plan if the student or scholar has adequate health insurance coverage that meets the requirements.

International students and scholars on visas may choose to waive the USD health requirement with a comparable insurance plan. J-1 students and scholars who wish to waive must also submit a copy of their health insurance certificate in English, which demonstrates the aforementioned features.  Individuals who fail to do so by the date of their arrival to USD will be automatically be enrolled in the USD international health insurance plan. The health insurance requirement can be waived only if this plan includes ALL of the following features:

  • Effective throughout the entire duration of their program and renewable for continuous coverage;
  • Minimum dollar coverage per illness or injuryat least $100,000 (not the same as $100,000);
  • Includes outpatient care (doctor visits, outpatient surgery, etc.);
  • Includes hospitalization;
  • Repatriation for at least $25,000;
  • Medical evacuation for at least $50,000; and
  • Cost of deductible, if any (cost of deductible must not exceed $500 per accident or illness).

International students and scholars who wish to obtain health insurance through the University of San Diego, or who wish to waive the coverage due to sufficient personal coverage, can do so by working with the Office of International Students and Scholars. Please refer to the Office of International Students and Scholars website for additional information.

Immunizations for International Students

The University of San Diego has a responsibility to provide an environment that promotes learning, and it is therefore committed to the health and well-being of all of its students. Prevention efforts for communicable diseases are a cornerstone of this philosophy and are aimed at protecting not only the individual but the community at large.

The University requires certain immunizations and health screening tests based on recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA). Emphasis is focused on those illnesses that can easily propagate in a campus setting and are typically spread by respiratory droplets.

Prior to enrolling at the University of San Diego, all incoming students are required to document their compliance with all institutional immunization and TB screening requirements. Visit the Student Health Center website to complete the mandatory immunization form and TB screening questionnaire.  Electronic submission is the fastest and preferred method; please note that you will need to create your MySanDiego account in order to submit the form. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in a registration hold upon matriculation. Specific questions regarding the immunization requirement should be directed to the Student Health Center.
