Professor Gidlund teaches Federal Tax Procedure.
Gidlund specializes in corporate tax issues, both domestic and international, with an emphasis on technical tax shelter analysis. He is San Diego managing counsel for the Office of Chief Counsel to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Gidlund has served in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel since 1984. Gidlund is also a frequent speaker at professional functions and attorney trainings.
Honors and Affiliations
Gidlund graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School. In 2004, he received the Financial Services Area Counsel Award for coordination of tax shelter promoter penalty cases. He was one of five recipients of the 2007 B. John Williams National Litigation Team Award for work on a complex Tax Court trial involving 52 witnesses and resulting in over 5,000 pages of transcript. Also in 2007, he received the Large & Mid-Size Business Division’s Counsel Manager of the Year Award. In 2009, he received the Treasury Department’s Legal Division Excellence in Management Award.
