Judge Whitten teaches family law advocacy.

Professional Experience

Whitten has been a trial judge for the Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County since 2006. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Whitten practiced civil litigation with Whitten Berry, P.L.L.C and Holloway, Odegard & Sweeney, P.C., both in Phoenix, Ariz. Prior to private practice, Whitten was a deputy prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. He clerked for the Honorable John Claiborne of the Arizona Court of Appeals. Whitten is a frequent trainer on trial skills and oral advocacy.

Honors and Affiliations

Whitten is a member of the state bars of Arizona and California. He is currently chair-elect of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) National Conference of State Trial Judges. He is also a member of the ABA Commission on the American Jury Project and co-chairs the ABA’s Judicial Division Record Editorial Board. Whitten is an American Board of Trial Advocates associate and chairs the Bench and Bar Committee of the Maricopa County Bar Association. He is the Maricopa County Representative to the Arizona Judges Association. Whitten also serves on the boards of a number of civic organizations.
