USD School of Law Dean Stephen Ferruolo Signs Letter Urging Against Proposed Budget Cuts to Legal Services Corporation

San Diego (March 21, 2017) – On March 10, the deans of 25 Catholic law schools in the United Sates, including University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo, signed a letter to Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Mick Mulvaney expressing concern about the government’s proposed budget cuts to the Legal Services Corporation (LSC).

LSC is the single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans in the nation, helping people who live in households with annual incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines – a category that includes almost one in five Americans.

Stating that they “share a commitment to make the justice system more accessible to the poor,” the deans urge the OMB to maintain funding for LSC. “Further cuts to the LSC,” they write, “would exacerbate a justice gap that remains deeply problematic for a nation committed to the rule of law.”
