MISSION

The primary mission of the Institute, in furtherance of the mission of the law school and its parent university, is to advance knowledge on legal topics of philosophical significance, particularly those legal topics that implicate moral, political, and religious philosophical issues.

Along with its primary mission of advancing knowledge generally, the Institute has several secondary missions:

  • To educate both faculty members and students at the law school on the philosophical implications of various legal topics, introduce them to some of the literature and arguments on those topics, and expose them to major international scholars who work on the topics.
  • To introduce major international scholars to the wealth of talent on the U.S.D. law faculty of which they might be unaware, and to acquaint them with the rich tradition of high-level intellectual exchange that characterizes the School of Law.
  • To supply from time to time conference papers of major significance written by internationally known scholars to U.S.D.’s two scholarly publications -- the San Diego Law Review and the Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues.
