Children’s Advocacy Institute

The Children's Advocacy Institute (CAI), founded at the nonprofit University of San Diego School of Law in 1989, is one of the nation's premiere academic, research, and advocacy organizations working to improve the lives of children and youth, with special emphasis on improving the child protection and foster care systems and enhancing resources that are available to youth aging out of foster care.

In its academic component, CAI trains law students and attorneys to be effective child advocates throughout their legal careers. Its Child Advocacy Clinic gives USD Law students three distinct clinical opportunities to advocate on behalf of children and youth, and its Dependency Counsel Training Program provides comprehensive training to licensed attorneys engaged in or contemplating Dependency Court practice.

CAI's research and advocacy component, conducted through its offices in San Diego, Sacramento, and Washington, D.C., seeks to leverage change for children and youth through impact litigation, regulatory and legislative advocacy, and public education. Active primarily at the federal and state levels, CAI's efforts are multi-faceted—comprehensively and successfully embracing all tools of public interest advocacy to improve the lives of children and youth.

On November 15, 2014, CAI will be commemorating its 25th anniversary by holding a celebratory dinner and silent auction to provide an opportunity to reflect upon the many ways in which CAI’s academic program and policy advocacy have improved the health and well-being of children and youth since 1989. It will also allow guests to join CAI in creating a legacy for our children and honoring special friends and supporters who share CAI’s commitment to enhancing the status of children in our society — including Congresswoman Susan Davis, whose commitment to children’s issues such as education and youth mentoring is unmatched.  Guests, who will include prominent professionals from the fields of law, medicine, education, and social welfare, as well as many of the area’s most prominent corporate, philanthropic and community leaders, will be among the first to hear exciting news about a recent development at the USD School of Law that will greatly enhance the field of child advocacy for years to come -- the creation of a USD School of Law Chair in Child Rights.  Proceeds from the event will support CAI’s future work to protect and promote the status of children through impact litigation, legislative and regulatory advocacy, and public education efforts at the local, state and federal levels.  For more details, sponsorship information, and to register for the event, please visit the event web page.
