ReunionsUSD School of Law Milestone Reunions

The classes of 1973, 1983, 1988, 1993, 2003 and 2008 celebrate milestone reunions on campus at USD on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5.

The classes of 1964, 1974, 1984, 1989, 1994, 2004 and 2009, have reunions in October 2014. In addition, the class of 1963 will be celebrating their 50-year reunion on Friday, January 31, 2014. If you are interested in serving on your Reunion Committee, please contact Shari Baurle Green, associate director of alumni relations or call (619) 260-4692.

The 2013 Rising Star Recent Alumni Award recipients are Tessie Abraham, '07, legislative counsel to Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Bibianne Fell, '04, partner/shareholder, Fleming & Fell, PC.

The Rising Star Recent Alumni Award is presented to alumni who have graduated within the past ten years and recognizes significant achievements in the legal profession or chosen field and a high level of community involvement.

2013 Entering ClassUSD School of Law's 2013 Entering Class Takes Oath of Professionalism

On August 22, 245 incoming first-year JD students and 28 comparative law and exchange students took USD School of Law's Oath of Professionalism at the Joan B. Kroc Peace & Justice Theatre. Transfer and first-year JD and LLM students received practical advice from guest speakers and were administered the USD Oath of Professionalism by the Presiding Judge of the San Diego Superior Court the Honorable Robert J. Professor SpectorInternational Law Scholar Horacio Spector Joins USD School of Law Faculty

Horacio Spector will join the USD faculty during the 2014 spring semester and divide his time between USD and the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Professor Spector has regularly taught at USD as a visiting professor of law since 2008. Spector was a research fellow with the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation at Harvard University in 1992, twice a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Heidelberg and in 1996 was awarded the Diploma of Merit Konex in Philosophy of Law. Professor FoxProf Fox Pens Huffington Post Article "The Future of Genetic Privacy"

On August 13, HuffingtonPost.com published an op-ed article by USD School of Law Assistant Professor of Law Dov Fox titled "The Future of Genetic Privacy." Professor Fox analyzes an emerging forensic technique called DNA phenotyping against the background of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in Maryland v. King. Read more.

Basil AlexanderUSD School of Law Alumni, Faculty Named 2013 San Diego County Top Attorneys

On July 31, The San Diego Daily Transcript announced its annual list of San Diego's "Top Attorneys." Among the 2013 list of 151 outstanding San Diego attorneys, alumni and employees from USD School of Law captured 42 spots: 40 law school alumni, one law school professor, and one law school administrator. Jalila AissiJalila Aissi '07 (JD) Named Empire State Fellow by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the members of the 2013-15 class of Empire State Fellows. USD School of Law alumna Jalila Aissi, '07 (JD), was one of 21 experienced professionals from diverse backgrounds who were selected through a highly competitive process that analyzed unique skills, leadership potential, commitment to public service, and creativity. A number of the newly announced class, including USD’s Aissi, will be placed in the governor's Executive Chamber, while others will be placed in state agencies to work with key advisors to the governor. Tracy J. LoganTracy J. Logan '09 (JD) Awarded Fulbright Professional Scholarship

Tracy J. Logan, '09 (JD), has won a Fulbright professional scholarship in climate change and clean energy, sponsored by the Australian and U.S. governments. Through her Fulbright Scholarship, Logan has traveled to Australia to undertake research at the University of Sydney to develop a clean energy policy encompassing the movement of energy. Her project involves developing a policy approach to increasing incentives for the planning and financing of electric infrastructure. It is her intention that this will facilitate the expanding renewable energy market and lay the groundwork for future initiatives that require a comprehensive, interconnected electric grid. Best Lawyers announced the 20th Edition of The Best Lawyers in America on August 15. Gwen Rutar Mullins, '87 (JD), was honored for her work in construction law. A partner at Howard & Howard in Las Vegas, Mullins concentrates her practice in the areas of construction law, probate, guardianship, trust administration, business and estate planning, corporate law, contracts, real estate and commercial litigation. Brian PeckBrian Peck '88 (JD) Appointed GO-Biz Deputy Director of International Affairs and Business Development

California Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Brian Peck, '88 (JD), deputy director of international affairs and business development at the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). Peck has been policy director at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers since 2011 and a lecturer in law for international trade policy at the USC Gould School of Law since 2009. Andrew M. Sugimoto '02Andrew M. Sugimoto '02 (JD) Named Commanding Officer of USCG Cutter Stratton

Andrew M. Sugimoto, '02 (JD), assumed command of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton in Alameda, Calif., on August 22, in a Change of Command Ceremony. Sugimoto reports to Stratton from Cleveland, where he served as chief, Incident Management Branch of the Ninth Coast Guard District. His area of responsibly spanned the five Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and parts of the surrounding states, including 1,500 miles of international border. Sugimoto has more than 10 years of sea time with seven tours afloat, three as commanding officer assignments. Read more.

Janice  MulliganJanice F. Mulligan '81 (JD) Appointed to California State Bar's Commission on Judicial Nominees

Janice F. Mulligan, '81 (JD), of the law firm of Mulligan Banham was appointed to the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE), the State Bar of California agency that evaluates all candidates who are under consideration for a judicial appointment by the governor. Mulligan will begin her term on the commission on January 31, 2014. Read more.

Joseph McGettiganSandusky Prosecutor Joseph McGettigan '81 (JD) Sheds Spotlight for Quieter Legal Life

Joseph McGettigan, '81 (JD), is probably most well-known for his prosecution of the multimillionaire John E. du Pont, accused of killing champion Olympic wrestler David Schultz in 1996 at his mansion in Philadelphia. In 2012, McGettigan was Pennsylvania's State Deputy Attorney General and lead prosecutor on yet another case that garnered nationwide media attention, the Jerry Sandusky child molestation case that brought down famed Pennsylvania State University football coach Joe Paterno and three of the school's top leaders. Now, a year after the trial that enthralled much of the country and sports world and ended with Sandusky's 30- to 60-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse, McGettigan has stepped back into a more anonymous life at a law practice in Berwyn, Pa. The nominating committee of the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors is calling for nominations for the 2014-15 Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award, and the 2014 Rising Star Recent Alumni Award. Nomination forms are available online and are due by March 1, 2014. Nominees will be notified in May 2014.
