Scholarship InitiativeDean's Scholarship Initiative Reaches First-Year Goal

The law school reached its goal of raising $500,000 for the first year of the Dean's Scholarship Initiative—a three-year effort to raise $1.5 million to increase overall funding for student scholarships. USD School of Law alumni and friends donated a total of $515,496 to support the three goals of the initiative, including: 1) $250,000 for Alumni Honor Scholarships to attract the highest quality students to USD; 2) $150,000 for Alumni Leadership Scholarships to retain top students and reward those who show potential for leadership; and 3) $100,000 for Alumni Summer Legal Work Grants to subsidize non-paying summer internships in the legal field. Fundraising for the Dean's Scholarship Initiative will continue over the next two years. Support the effort by making a gift online. Read more.

The Rising Star Recent Alumni Award is presented to alumni who have graduated within the past ten years and recognizes significant achievements in the legal profession or chosen field and a high level of community involvement.

Professor DarbyIn Memoriam: Professor of Law Emeritus Joseph J. Darby

USD School of Law Professor of Law Emeritus Joseph J. Darby passed away on June 13, 2013, after a battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)/Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 82. In 1965, Darby joined the law faculty at USD, where he taught and wrote in the areas of international and comparative law for more than 40 years. During that time, he also taught as part of the International Faculty of Comparative Law in Strasbourg, France and lectured by invitation at universities in Austria, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Israel, Poland and South Africa.

In December 2012, the law school established the Darby Endowed Scholarship Fund with a generous gift from the Avery-Tsui Foundation at the request of Natasha Wong, '04 (LLM). The gift was made in recognition of Darby's outstanding scholarship and inspirational impact on law students. The annual recipient, known as the Darby Scholar, is an LLM student with an interest in international law. Read more.

Immigration Clinic Provides
Vital Information to Parents

On June 25, the USD Legal Clinics completed its first outreach of the summer semester with a presentation by the Immigration Clinic at Cherokee Elementary School. Supervising Attorneys Peggy A. Kane, '98, and Sandra M. Wagner, '77, presented information to parents and young adults on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Read more.

Professor McGowanProfessor Miranda McGowan Comments on Landmark Supreme Court Cases for Local Media

USD School of Law Herzog Endowed Scholar and Professor of Law Miranda McGowan was quoted in the San Diego Union-Tribune and The Daily Transcript in articles that summarized the U.S. Supreme Court rulings on two landmark marriage-equality cases. The court found part of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and allowed to stand a lower court ruling that struck down California's Proposition 8 ballot initiative, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Veterans InitiativeUSD Welcomes Government and Military Officials, Unveils Law School's Veterans Initiative

On May 30, USD leaders welcomed U.S. Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego), San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, Coronado City Councilman Richard Bailey, military officials, and veterans to a special reception to unveil USD's Initiative to Protect Student Veterans. The first program of its kind in the nation, the initiative educates and protects military veterans from the misleading practices of some for-profit educational institutions and lenders through a multipronged approach that focuses on research, advocacy, and the provision of free legal services through the law school's Veterans Legal Clinic. California Energy LegislationEPIC Updates California Energy Legislation Site

The Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) monitors California Legislation related to energy and climate change. EPIC recently updated their online Legislative Center with a list of bills that passed out of their house of origin and are advancing through the legislature. Read more.

Professor Dalton and Professor DevittMargaret Dalton and Michael Devitt Promoted to Tenured Clinical Professors

Margaret Dalton and Michael Devitt have been promoted to the rank of tenured clinical professors at USD School of Law effective September 2013. "These promotions are well deserved," said Dean Ferruolo. "The faculty's awarding of tenured clinical professor status to Margaret and Mike is an expression of the law school's clear commitment to enhance and expand our already strong clinical and advocacy programs, making these programs an integral component of the training we provide to all our law students." Professor HirschProfessor Adam Hirsch Joins USD School of Law Faculty

Professor Adam Hirsch has accepted a faculty appointment at USD School of Law. He has served as a visiting professor since fall 2012 and will join the faculty in August. "The appointment of Adam Hirsch is another great addition to our faculty," said Dean Ferruolo. "He perfectly complements the previously announced appointments of Howard Abrams, Miranda Fleischer and Victor Fleischer to our tax faculty and strengthens important parts of our core curriculum." Professor Orly Lobel's article "Don't Understate the Advantages of Arbitration" appeared on the June 14, edition of Voice of San Diego, an online news organization that engages San Diego citizens in important conversations about a variety of topics. Lobel provided insight on private adjudication, "one of the most dramatic and controversial shifts in the legal system" and how it fares compared to the traditional courtroom." Read more.

Laurel DavisLaurel E. Davis '87 Appointed U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge for the District of Nevada

On July 9, Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit announced the appointment of Las Vegas attorney Laurel E. Davis, '87, to serve as a judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nevada. Laurel has practiced law in Nevada and Arizona for 26 years. Since 2007, she has been a director of the Las Vegas law firm of Fennemore Craig, P.C., where her practice focused on Chapter 11 business bankruptcy, representing debtors, secured creditors, large unsecured creditors, unsecured creditor committees, equity holders, trustees, indenture trustees and parties seeking to buy assets or businesses out of bankruptcy. Dawn EisenbergDawn R. Eisenberg '93 (LLM) Named to Head SDSU�s Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate

Dawn R. Eisenberg, '93, has been named the new director of the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate at San Diego State University's (SDSU) College of Business Administration. Dawn comes to SDSU from the Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington, DC, where she served as program director/professor at the school�s real estate graduate program. She earned her bachelor�s degree in real estate and a juris doctorate degree at Arizona State University. Eisenberg earned an LLM degree in taxation from USD School of Law. Read more.

On July 6, The Seattle Times published an opinion article about patent trolls which was written by USD School of Law Alumni Board Member John "Jay" Jurata, Jr., '00, Jay is a Washington, D.C.-based partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, specializing in the intersection of antitrust and intellectual property. Benjamin WagnerBenjamin L. Wagner '05 to Receive San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program Pro Bono Publico Award

Benjamin L. Wagner, '05, an attorney in the San Diego office of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., has been selected to receive the Pro Bono Publico Award from the San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program (SDVLP). Ben and other SDVLP award recipients will be honored at the annual Justice for All Celebration on September 19, at the San Diego Natural History Museum. The SDVLP Pro Bono Publico Award honors a San Diego attorney who has selflessly provided legal services on behalf of SDVLP. Ben was selected for his pro bono work on behalf of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Read more.

Lisa CharukulHiggs Fletcher & Mack LLP Provides $10,000 Diversity Scholarship

For the third straight year, Higgs Fletcher & Mack LLP, has provided a $10,000 scholarship to a USD law student. The scholarship was made possible by contributions from 29 of the firm's attorneys, and awarded to Lisa Charukul for the 2012-13 academic year. "Our firm and attorneys have made it a priority to promote diversity in law school education," said Steve Cologne, '87, a partner at Higgs Fletcher & Mack. "We all support this important mission and are proud to collectively continue to help USD students complete their education." Read more.

Michael PopkinsMichael J. Popkins '76 Appointed San Diego County Superior Court Judge

California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Michael J. Popkins, '76, San Diego County Superior Court Judge. Michael, 62, has been a deputy public defender in San Diego County since 1985, handling numerous high-profile matters, including several death penalty cases. He was lead attorney in the defense of John Gardner III, who pleaded guilty in 2010 to raping and killing two North County teenagers. Read more.

Basil AlexanderBasil Alexander '06 Named to Building Design & Construction's "40 Under 40" List

Basil P. Alexander, '06, PE, CPE, CCE, PSP, LEED AP, Managing Consultant with Hill's Construction Claims Group, has been named by Building Design & Construction magazine to its eighth annual "40 Under 40" list of outstanding young professionals in the architecture, engineering and construction industry.
