As a State Bar of California-approved MCLE provider, USD School of Law provides numerous programs throughout the year that qualify for MCLE credit often at no cost to alumni. Tom Ham's LighthouseDecember California Bar Swearing-In Ceremony and Luncheon

Tuesday, December 4 at 10a.m.-1p.m.

Dean Stephen Ferruolo and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations is hosting a celebratory luncheon at Tom Ham's Lighthouse immediately after the State of California Bar Swearing-In Ceremony at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. All July 2012 Bar passers will be hosted by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Bar passers are welcome to bring family, friends and guests to the luncheon at a cost of $20 per person. Law school faculty, administrators, Law Alumni Board members and Board of Visitors members are also invited to attend. Register online.

Mock InterviewsAlumni Needed for Mock Interviews: January 22-25

Tuesday, January 22 - Friday, January 25

Career Services is recruiting alumni to conduct mock job interviews with students for the law school's annual Alumni Mock Interview Program. More than 150 students will participate, requiring at least 35 alumni interviewers to conduct "mock interviews" with four students over a two-hour period. Event details and registration.

Join more than 1,000 USD law alumni to be included the the 2012-13 Alumni Advisor Directory and attend the 31st annual Careers in the Law program—the law school's largest and most important alumni and student networking event. Women's Law Caucus LogoWomen's Law Caucus Annual Auction - Call For Donations

USD's Women's Law Caucus hosts their annual Faculty Auction on February 14, 2013, to raise money for the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) and various charities assisting women in the San Diego area. Alumni may donate an outing with students to the live auction. In the past, activities have included poker games, lunches and rounds of golf. Outings can be individualized by specifying when, where and how many students can participate. An alternative to donating to the live auction is contributing items to the silent auction. Examples of past donations are gift cards, gift baskets, study aids and USD apparel. Read more about how to participate.

USD School of Law Professor Jordan Barry appeared on KPBS-FM Midday Edition and KPBS-TV Evening Edition to discuss some recent changes to San Diego's tourism tax. Read more.

Professor KamisarYale Kamisar Named USD Professor of Law Emeritus

Retired USD School of Law Professor Yale Kamisar has been named Professor of Law Emeritus as voted by the law school's faculty and approved by the university's Board of Trustees. Appointment of emeritus status may be granted for uncommonly meritorious teaching, scholarship or service to the university, taking into account years of service to the USD and contributions to the nominee's profession. Diversity ScholarshipsCalifornia Bar Foundation Awards Two USD Law Students Diversity Scholarships

The California Bar Foundation presented its annual Diversity Scholarships totaling $142,550 to 19 law students including USD School of Law student Claude Durden, Jr. Chosen from a pool of more than 220 applicants, the scholarship recipients each receive $7,500. They were selected based on academic excellence, financial need and commitment to the community. The foundation also gave 21 public interest scholarships at the reception. Announced in April, those scholarships recognize students who aspire to be public interest lawyers. USD School of Law student Lisa Heng Charukul was named the foundation's Jim Pheiffer Scholar. Professor PartnoyProfessor Partnoy Interviewed on 60 Minutes About Muppet Manifesto Author's New Book

On October 22, USD George E. Barrett Professor of Law and Finance Frank Partnoy was interviewed by Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes. Partnoy provided expert commentary on former Goldman Sachs investment banker Greg Smith's new book, Why I Left Goldman Sachs: A Wall Street Story. Read more

Cherie BlairCherie Blair Delivers Keynote Address at Bergman Memorial Lecture

On September 19, USD School of Law welcomed Cherie Blair—human rights barrister, part-time judge and wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair—to deliver the 2012 Jane Ellen Bergman Memorial Lecture Series keynote address. In her talk titled, "Forging the Future: Human Rights, Justice and the Law," Blair discussed her perspectives on life, learning, and the law. Read more.

Brent Bernau '85USD Law Librarian Brent Bernau '85 Discusses New Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act in Daily Transcript Article

Pardee Legal Research Center Collections Development Librarian Brent Bernau, '85, was quoted in a San Diego Daily Transcript article that highlights California's new Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act (UELMA). The bill, signed last month by Governor Jerry Brown, goes into affect on July 1, 2015. UELMA establishes an outcomes-based, technology-neutral framework for providing online legal material with the same level of trustworthiness traditionally provided by publication in a law book. The law requires a method to determine that electronic legal material is unaltered. Along with this authentication, the law requires the material to be preserved, either in electronic or print form, and accessible for use by the public on a permanent basis. Read more.

Trade MissionUSD School of Law School Selected to Participate in U.S. Education Services Trade Mission in Brazil

USD School of Law was selected to participate in the largest U.S. education services trade mission in U.S. Department of Commerce history, promoting its LLM in Comparative Law program to law students and attorneys across Brazil. USD was one of 66 U.S. colleges and universities—and one of only four law schools—selected to participate in the September 2012 trade mission. U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez accompanied the group of educators to Brasilia, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where they met with more than 7,500 Brazilian students and parents at recruitment fairs in each city. Distinguished Alumni Award2012 Distinguished Alumni and Rising Star Recent Alumni Award

On November 16, USD School of Law and the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors presented the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) to A. John Murphy Jr. '72 (BA) '75 (JD), Managing Partner, Wickersham & Murphy
Palo Alto, and the Honorable Robert J. Trentacosta '79, Presiding Judge, San Diego Superior Court. The Rising Star Recent Alumni Award was presented to Laurie G. Rowen '04, Co-Founder/Owner, Montage Legal Group.

Michael T. Williams '82Michael T. Williams '82 Appointed SVP, General Counsel of Staples, Inc.

2010 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Michael T. Williams, '82, has been appointed senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Staples, Inc. Williams will have global management responsibility for the company's legal team, reporting to Staples' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ron Sargent. Read more.

Robert Amador '82Robert Amador '82 Elected to San Diego Superior Court

On November 6, Robert Amador, '82, was elected to San Diego Superior Court, earning 59 percent of the vote. Amador is a veteran deputy district attorney with more than 29 years of experience as a prosecutor in the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. Read more.

Paula S. Rosenstein '86 Paula S. Rosenstein '86 Appointed to San Diego County Superior Court

California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced the appointment of Paula S. Rosenstein, '86, to fill a vacancy on the San Diego County Superior Court. Rosenstein is a shareholder at Rosenstein Wilson and Dean PLC, where she has been an attorney since 1997, specializing in employment litigation. Read more.

Hal D. Rosner '83Law Alumni Board Member Hal D. Rosner '83 Featured in Los Angeles Times

Hal D. Rosner, '83, was featured in the Los Angeles Times on November 25. Hal is a partner at San Diego's Rosner, Barry & Babbitt, one of the largest law firms in the country specializing entirely in consumer auto fraud cases. Founded by Hal in 1985, the firm employs 10 full-time attorneys and reviews 200 to 400 potential cases a month, taking on about 10 percent of them. To date, Hal has handled more than 1,000 auto fraud cases in the Golden State, winning millions of dollars for his clients. Read more.

Chad Peace '12Independent Voter Network Founder Chad Peace '12 Interviewed on KPBS Evening Edition

On October 12, Chad Peace, '12, founder of the Independent Voter Network (IVN), was interviewed by Peggy Pico, the host of KPBS Evening Edition about the new online network dedicated to providing political analysis and rational commentary to elevate the level of public discourse when discussing politics. An online news platform for communication, IVN provides a forum for respectful discussion between independent-minded voters, public officials, civic leaders and journalists. The site was launched in San Diego in January 2012. Read more.

Kellen Winslow '93Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Kellen Winslow '93 Appointed VP, Athletics and Wellness at Wisonsin's Lakeland College

Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Kellen Winslow Sr., '93, has been named vice president for athletics and wellness at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. In addition to serving as director of athletics, Kellen will lead the development of a college-wide program focusing on wellness designed to help students understand how lifestyle choices made in college impact their personal health and future career path. Lizzette Herrera Castellanos '03Public Service and Diversity Assistant Director Lizzette Herrera Castellanos '03 Appointed to HNBA Latina Commission

The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) announced that USD School of Law Assistant Director for Public Service and Diversity Lizzette Herrera Castellanos, '03, has been chosen by HNBA National President Peter M. Reyes, Jr., to serve on the 2012-13 HNBA Latina Commission. Lizette was one of only 25 appointments to this national commission. Read more.

Kate Payerle '07Kate Payerle '07 Awarded Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award

On September 11, Kate Payerle, '07, an associate at Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A., was presented the Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award at the first Annual Pro Bono Awards at the Charlotte City Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was recognized for her dedication to serving local families in need with donated legal services. Kate accepted her first pro bono case with Legal Aid of North Carolina in 2009. After two and a half years and 279 hours on the case, she not only achieved a favorable result for her client, but also won her first pro bono jury trial in Mecklenburg County Superior Court. And more than that, the client credits her with helping restore his life. Read more.

Kayvon Pourmirzaie '10Kayvon Pourmirzaie '10 Wins UCSD Entrepreneur Challenge

USD School of Law alumnus and Nasseo, Inc. co-founder Kayvon Pourmirzaie, '10, accepted the first-place prize of $57,000 in cash and legal services at the Sixth Annual University of California San Diego (UCSD) Entrepreneur Challenge Business Plan Competition in late June. The company was also awarded the first place prize of $7,500 in cash and legal services at the UCSD Entrepreneur Challenge's Executive Summary Competition in April, making Nasseo, Inc., the first startup to win both the UCSD Entrepreneur Challenge Executive Summary and Business Plan Competitions in the same year. NominationsSeeking Nominations for Law Alumni Board, Distinguished Alumni Award and Rising Star REcent Alumni Award

The nominating committee of the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors is calling for nominations for the 2013-14 Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2013 Rising Star Recent Alumni Award. Nominations are due by Friday, March 8, 2013, and nominees will be notified in May.
