This event occurred in the past

Date and Time

  • Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

5998 Alcala Park San Diego, CA 92110

Join philosophy professor Brian R. Clack for an engrossing look at Freud’s perspectives on love, drugs, art and religion as a way to grapple with the pain of human existence.

Based on the assumption that life is full of difficulties and overwhelming challenges, Clack will explore the strategies and coping mechanisms people have typically used in order to soften the pains of their existence: intoxication, religious belief, the enjoyment and creation of art, and the pursuit and attainment of sexual love. Following Freud, Clack holds each of these four mechanisms were created from the need to treat the incurable sufferings of the human condition.

We cannot guarantee that you will walk away with new means to handle life’s trials, but you might give your current coping mechanisms another glance!

Brian R. Clack is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of San Diego. He formerly taught in Oxford, England, and is the author of four books, including Wittgenstein, Frazer and Religion, and The Philosophy of Religion: A Critical Introduction.

Also attending from the university:
