Transfer and Visiting Applicants

The University of San Diego School of Law believes that transfer students enhance the quality of USD’s law program. Because of this, a select number of spaces are available for transfer applicants each year.

Applicants who have completed at least one full academic year at another ABA-accredited law school and have fulfilled equivalent entrance requirements may be admitted with advanced-standing status to the School of Law's full-time or part-time program. Work completed will be evaluated for credit toward graduation requirements.

To be considered for admission as a transfer student, an applicant must provide the Admissions Office with the following.

  • A completed and dated admission application with transfer indicated for entering status
  • A personal statement and current resume
  • Official Law School transcript(s) forwarded by your current school’s registrar
  • Letter of good standing and class rank forwarded by your current school’s dean
  • Official CAS report (from LSAC)

Applications should be received by July 15 for admission to the fall semester or January 2 for admission to the spring semester. All transfer students need to satisfy the School of Law's academic, graduation and residency requirements.

Scholarship funding is available to those who qualify.

Applicants enrolled at another ABA-accredited law school may apply for admission as a visiting student on a full-time or part-time basis. Visiting students are permitted to enroll for courses, but are not degree candidates at the School of Law. Credits earned by visiting students may be applied toward the degree requirements at their home school.

To be considered for admission as a visiting student, an applicant must provide the Admissions Office with the following:

  • A completed admission application form (supporting documents, such as CAS or LSAT data, are not needed) and personal statement

  • An official law school transcript from the applicant's home school.

  • A letter from the applicant's current law school dean, dated after issuance of the above transcript, indicating that the applicant is in good academic standing and has approval to study at the School of Law as a visiting student.

Applications from visiting students should be received by July 15 for admission to the fall semester or January 2 for admission to the spring semester. In some cases, visiting students experience difficulty in obtaining preferred classes or schedules, as priority is given to current USD law students.

If you have any questions, you may contact the Office of Admissions at (619) 260-4528 or via email at jdinfo@sandiego.edu.

International Visiting Students

Applicants enrolled at a law school outside of the United States may apply for admission as a visiting student. International visiting students are permitted to enroll in courses, but are not degree candidates at the University of San Diego School of Law. Credits earned by visiting students may be applied toward the degree requirements at their home school, as approved by such institution. Applicants may apply for admission as an International Visiting Student after completing a minimum of at least one year of legal studies.

To be considered for admission as an International Visiting Student, an applicant must provide Graduate and International Programs with the following:

  • Application
  • Non-refundable application fee (US $50.00)
  • Official law school transcript(s)
  • Official law school class rank (if available)
  • Résumé or curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS score
  • A letter from the applicant's current law school dean, dated after issuance of the above transcript, indicating that the applicant is in good academic standing and has approval to study at the School of Law as a visiting student.

Applications from international visiting students should be received by June 1 for admission to the fall semester, November 1 for admission to the spring semester, or April 1 for admission to the summer term. In some cases, International Visiting Students may experience difficulty in obtaining preferred classes or schedules, as priority is given to current USD law students.
