AbstractNow that the economic standing of women has improved and the law?s concept of marriage has come to resemble a true partnership, the logic of a divorce regime that allocates alimony on the basis of gender must be opened for questions. Gender neutrality has made its way into alimony statutes, and women have become the primary breadwinners in one-third of all American marriages. Thus, women are more susceptible to paying alimony, or to not receiving it, today more than ever before. Yet very little empirical research has been generated in the last 50 years or so that investigates the attitudes of divorcing spouses in dealing with alimony.
