Author(s)Daniel Jones

AbstractMost jurisdictions today recognize two forms of periodic alimony: ?permanent,? which is designed to provide the primary source of support for the recipient divorcee; and ?rehabilitative,? which is meant to provide post-divorce support for a short but specific and terminable period of time to allow the recipient to develop skills, training, or education necessary for self-support. Courts award rehabilitative alimony to encourage the recipient to achieve self-support based on the dependent spouse?s needs.
This article discusses the history of rehabilitative alimony, social trends of shifting responsibility, and what jurisdictions recognize today.
