Abstract"Abandonment" of a child means desertion by the parent with the intent to completely sever the parent/child relationship, including its rights and obligations. California's current version of the abandonment claim for purposes of terminating parental rights is expressed in section 7822 of the Family Code. In the reported cases, assertion of abandonment is almost always a prelude to adoption proceedings, but having an adoptive parent-in-waiting to replace the abandoning parent is not essential to maintenance of the claim.
