AbstractThe research we describe n this article examines the processes that underlie the development of internal standards of form within communication systems. Specifically, we are interested in how time and function shape the construction of a coherent and internally consistent system of communication symbols. Thus, a snapshot of language creation at any particular point in time (much like the snapshot of the novice driver behind the wheel)contains linguistic forms that are simultaneously shaped by historical, microgenetic and ontogenetic processes.
