What is the San Diego Journal of Climate and Energy Law?

The San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law (JCEL) is a student-run periodical that publishes articles related to climate and energy law once a year. Membership on JCEL is a prestigious honor as well as an excellent learning experience, particularly for students with an interest in the field. JCEL members enhance their legal research and writing skills by assisting with the publication, editing and cite-checking of each issue.

What does membership on the San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law entail?

The San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law (JCEL) is a substantial responsibility. All members are required to complete one "comment"—research paper intended for publication—and participate in cite-checking exercises periodically throughout the year.

The comment will discuss an interesting and emerging topic in climate and energy law. Every JCEL member receives personalized editing assistance on the comment from a member of JCEL's board. Papers determined to be of exceptional quality and interest will be selected for publication in JCEL. Writing an article published by JCEL is a distinction that will remain with the student throughout his or her legal career.

All members are also required to assist in the editing and preparation of articles for publication. Members review the accuracy of the research in every article selected for publication, from both institutional and student authors. Reviewing articles is a very important task because it ensures the quality of the publication in addition to teaching invaluable legal writing and editing skills.

Who runs the San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law?

The editorial board runs JCEL. The editorial board consists of an editor-in-chief, a managing editor, a chief articles editor, a chief comments editor, articles editors and comments editors. Each board member is assigned specific editorial tasks, and the board works together to complete each issue of JCEL and to assist second year members in their completion of comments and assignments.

The editorial board is selected by the outgoing editorial board from within JCEL membership ranks. Membership on the editorial board is an honor and requires a significant time commitment.

JCEL receives tremendous support from the Assistant Director of Law Journals, Brigid Ann Bennett, and the Director of the Energy Policy Initiative Center, Scott Anders.
