Using research as a tool to illuminate what works, we're fueling pedagogical shifts that support all learners

The IEE is comprised of experienced researchers and educational leaders who are dedicated to helping schools effectively integrate technology in K-12 settings. We utilize a variety of research methods to meet the needs of the communities and stakeholders with whom we work. Our goal is to help schools and districts make evidence-based decisions that transform educational environments and improve student learning. The IEE deliberately integrates research with thoughtful consulting to help accelerate effective innovations in learning and to rethink the systems in which learning occurs. Bridging the World of Work and STEM (funded by NSF)

In Summer 2017 the IEE was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to bridge the world of work and informal STEM education. Through this grant, the IEE will design, develop, implement, and test a multilayered STEM learning approach specific to STEM learning and workforce development in STEM fields targeting Hispanic youth. The STEM World of Work project will explore youth STEM identity through three mechanisms: (1) an assessment of their individual interests, strengths, and values, (2) exposure to an array of viable STEM careers, and (3) engagement in rigorous hands-on STEM activities. The project centers on a youth summer STEM enrichment program and a series of follow-up booster sessions delivered during the academic year in informal contexts to promote family engagement. Paramount to this work is the core focus on San Diego's Five Priority Workforce Sectors: Advanced Manufacturing, Information and Communications Technology, Clean Energy, Healthcare, and Biotech. The Monarch School Project

Over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, the Institute for Entrepreneurship in Education (IEE) proudly partnered with the Monarch School, whose mission is to educate students impacted by homelessness. Their work and innovative approach in supporting homeless youth is celebrated throughout the San Diego community and has been reported on by national news publications, like the Huffington Post. In the coming 2017-2018 school year, the IEE will build upon this work by supporting the Monarch School to develop a comprehensive system for collecting and analyzing data, facilitate professional learning about data-driven practice, strengthen communication of progress and outcomes, and enhance the “life skills” pillars with a focus on the College and Career Readiness lab. Da Vinci Schools Extension Program Evaluation (funded by ECMC Foundation)

The Da Vinci Extension Program (DVX) is designed so that students have the opportunity to “Do College Differently.” For DVX students “differently” includes access to a competencybased education that is applicable to today’s workforce. The program’s mix of online classes and in-person academic support is flexible enough to meet students’ busy schedules. DVX is low cost and offers clear pathways to AA degrees in general studies and healthcare management and BA degrees in communications, business, or healthcare management. The IEE conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the DVX program to better understanding the potential that this alternate pathway has for students. Please read the full evaluation report here.
