iPad Support and Performance Limitations

iPads have no serviceable parts.  Therefore, if something goes wrong with the device, Information Technology Services (ITS) technicians can only attempt two possible fixes: a hard rebooting of the device or a complete restore of the operating system (OS). Problems not resolved with these fixes will require the iPad be serviced directly by Apple.  This may cause a delay in availability of the iPad for the user.

Only Apple iPad accessories will be supported on campus.

"Jailbreaking” (using software unauthorized by Apple) of the iPad is not supported on the University campus. ITS technicians will not support any device that has been modified in this manner. This practice will void the warranty of the product.

Data Recovery Limitations

iPad files are stored in a format that is not recoverable by ITS technicians. If an iPad has a hardware failure, the only possibility of recovering any document is if a backup file stored by iTunes during the last iPad/computer synchronization is available. If you have not recently synchronized your iPad with your computer, any recent changes will be lost.

Software Support Limitations

The iPad user, or the user’s department, at the discretion of the department, will be responsible for any charges related to the acquisition of individual applications for the device. Payment problems and disputes will have to be handled by the individual user or the user’s department and resolved directly with the respective providing company (i.e. Apple or AT&T).

Due to the vast amount of applications available through the App store, ITS technicians will only be able to provide support for a select set of applications.  At this time ITS will support the MySDMobile USD app, as well as official Apple productivity software releases such as the iWork suite of products including Keynote, Numbers, and Pages.

Compatibility between programs cannot be guaranteed. For example, there is no guarantee that a document created in MS Excel, on a PC or Mac computer, will be editable or completely viewable in the equivalent iPad Numbers application. The same applies to MS Word and Pages or Keynote/MS PowerPoint and the iPad version of Keynote.

Network Support Limitations

Information Technology Services will not provide data plan funding for the 3G iPad model.  The iPad user, or the user’s department, at the discretion of the department, will be responsible for any charges related to a data plan.  Payment problems and disputes will have to be handled by the individual user or the user’s department and resolved directly with the respective providing company (i.e. Apple or AT&T).

Due to security limitations required to maintain a stable and secure infrastructure, any piece of software on the iPad that requires a “client” or “server” application installed on your existing desktop or laptop computer will not function on the university network. This includes but is not limited to Things, PrintCentral, Todo, Air Display, and Bento. Currently the iPad is not compatible with the university VPN system.

Functionality Limitations

Printing is currently not supported with the iPad on campus.  While third-party vendors solutions are available, these solutions are not currently ITS supported.

Multitasking is not currently supported within the iPad OS.   For example, if you are working on a document in one of the iWork mobile productivity applications, you cannot simultaneously be logged into an instant messaging application.

Exceptions: Applications which are built in to OS and can run in the background such as the:

  • iPod music player
  • Safari web browser
  • Mail application

Apple may begin support of multitasking on the new iPhone in June.  It has been stated, however, that multitasking for the iPad will not be supported until later this fall.

Website Access for certain sites will be limited or unavailable.  You may be unable to access sites in the same way you currently access them from your customary computer.  Flash websites and any website requiring an external component or an application running in the background (e.g. certain Java sites, Oracle, Flash, ActiveX control, etc…) will not function on the iPad.  The Kronos time card page can be accessed via the Mac version (https://kronos.sandiego.edu/mac).

Video Output with the use of an external adapter connected to a projector or external monitor has limited support on the iPad.  The adapter required for video output must be purchased separately at an additional cost to the user or the user’s department. 

Not all software can be viewed via the video output option.  A program must specifically be programmed to take advantage of this video option. The default iPad OS cannot be displayed via this option.  A supporting application must be launched first in order to view the iPad OS.

A program such as Keynote is designed to allow video output.  Some programs, such as Safari, don not allow video output. Movies purchased through iTunes are designated as “protected content” therefore cannot be viewed via the video output option.

iPads do not allow mirroring of displays.  When you connect your iPad to project or to be viewed on an external monitor, the screen of your physical iPad will not be visible.

Output resolution is limited to 1024 x 768.
