How to get Microsoft Office 365 University for free as a student, staff, or faculty

As one of the many benefits of your education or employment here at the University of San Diego, you can take advantage of Microsoft's Office for Education program that allows you to use Microsoft Office 365 for free.  This is not a trial version; it is has the full version of Word, Excel, OneNote, Outlook and PowerPoint. Please follow the directions below to take advantage of this fantastic program.

How to Download & Install Office 365

  • Go to the Microsoft Office website by clicking this link-
  • Enter your USD email address (with the and click Get started
  • The page will ask if you are a student or a teacher 
  • If you are student, click I’m a student
  • For all others (staff/faculty), select I’m a teacher. Although the website only focuses on students and teachers, this program is available to all employees.
  • The website will automatically recognize you as affiliated with the university. Click Sign in

  • Enter your USDOne credentials (just your username without the

  • Click Start
  • It will authenticate; this can a few seconds. It may prompt you to invite people to try Office 365, click Skip (in blue) beneath Send invitations
  • To install the Office programs on your computer, click Install Office 2016 in the right hand corner
  • Read the instructions it gives you. This will look a little different for those on Mac computers, but the process will be similar. Once you are done reading the instructions, you can click Close
  • Open the downloaded install file, and hit Run, then allow it to make changes to your computer by clicking Yes
  • This will begin the installation; this may take a few minutes. Once it is finished, the window will only stay up for a few seconds and then close automatically (you may miss it if you are not looking at your screen)
  • You will now see the Office program icons on your computer’s task bar
    Note: you can unpin these any time by right clicking on the icon and selecting Unpin this program from taskbar
  • Launch any of the Office programs and click Accept
  • Office might activate automatically. However, if you see the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard, follow the prompts to activate Office. If you need activation help, see Activate Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013
