CE is the Universities Learning Management System and is sometimes referred to as WebCT or Blackboard. WebCT/Blackboard LMS is world-wide with thousands of institutions and hundreds of thousands for students using it. The LMS provides access to materials and communication between class members and instructors. It also allows for announcements, calendar items, and assignments for classes removing the problem of students having to make do without should they have missed a class or misplaced assignments, syllabi or forgotten deadlines.
CE at USD is not intended to be used in place of face-to-face teaching, but rather in addition to it.

CE at USD is used most commonly for course management, communication, and as a materials repository. It is used primarily to augment face-to-face teaching and learning, although there are a number of completely on-line courses as well.
With each year at USD, more and more students are demanding that courses utilize the system to better meet their needs. Professors are finding more and more uses for it, often integrating other technologies with it.
In Fall 08 USD had …
- 8280 users
- 7660 active students
- 620 active faculty
- 2256 total courses
Depending on how it is used, interaction, knowledge construction, and activities done outside of class have been proven to greatly enhance learning and a learning management system provides an effective platform to do so.
For instructors, it is a fool-proof way of removing any excuses students may have had of ‘not knowing’ when something is due or not having had access to it.
At a minimum, CE allows instructors to place:
- Due dates and events on the calendar
- Content, files, and materials
- Learning activities
- Discussions
- Assignments and assessments
on-line for students to access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
At a minimum, CE allows students to (depending on the instructor’s settings)
- Access content, files, and materials
- Participate in discussions, on-line chat, and activities
- Communicate and interact with each other and instructors
- Check their grades
- And many other things
on-line 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Easy! There are three steps in the process for first time users, and two steps* for repeat users. (Take me to the CE section: How do I Get a Course?)
- Attend a training session
- Submit a Course Request form*
- Build a new blank course or copy an existing one*
- Visit the LMS (Blackboard/WebCT) section of this site to get information on our CE support. The section contains information on technical and design assistance including ideas of how to get started building your own course with or without the starter template and other details.
