Facebook

What is Facebook?

suiteFacebook is a free Web 2.0 social networking application that was originally designed by Mark Zuckerberg while attending Harvard University as a digital replacement, or sorts, for the paper facebooks that many universities hand out to their freshman students.  Facebook is now available to anyone over 13 years of age and is used as an online means of connecting with friends and colleagues.  Members can post information about themselves, create a personal profile, and post updates about their lives to share with others of their choosing.

Facebook at USD

Facebook has been popular among student populations now for some time.  Since 2006 when Facebook announced unrestricted membership, its user base has grown exponentially and it is currently one of the highest ranked Web sites on the Internet in terms of overall traffic.  Now campus entities and departments also make their presence known in this social networking atmosphere by creating groups and pages where other Facebook members can find up to date information, event postings, and re-connect with classmates.

Many groups at USD are making information available to students, faculty and staff this way. Some of those groups include: The University of San Diego, USD SOLES, USD School of Business Administration (11 total), USD Alumni Association, USD Career Services, and many others as well as special student groups are too numerous to list here.

Why do I want it?
  • Facebook allows you to …

    • Re-connect with classmates/colleagues
    • Meet new people with similar interests
    • Share and post updates and information with your network of friends
    • Share departmental information with a selected group
    • Post event information and current happenings for group members and page fans
