Football network shares (Football server)
The football coaches have network shared drives that are not managed by ITS (typically called V Z and X drives, or referred to as their server). These drives are hosted on a Windows XP Professional desktop machine located in the football trailers, and are shared out using SMB. They are used to play videos using their DSV (Digital Sports Video) software.
Troubleshooting:
- Is the computer attempting to connect to the network share on the wired or wireless network? Computers connecting to the wireless network will be unable to connect to the shared drives. They must be on the wired network.
- If the shortcuts to the mapped drives are no longer present or have been accidentally deleted, they can be rediscovered by clicking on the "Network Places" icon (in either the start menu or on the desktop) or go to start menu > control panel > network connections > then click on "My Network Places" on the left hand column under "Other Network Places". From there you should see the individual shared folders and map them.
- Is the user receiving the message: "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept"? If so, this is because the maximum of 10 users are trying to simultaneously access the network share. Windows XP Professional has a limitation of 10 users accessing a single SMB share concurrently, and there is no available workaround. Someone will have to disconnect the drives and close out all windows accessing the drive in order for another person to access it.
- Is it affecting more than one computer? Since these are SMB shares, if the desktop (what they call their server) hosting the shares is powered off or freezes, they will become unavailable. The desktop is currently located in the second football trailer, in Sam Anno's office.
