Frequently Asked Questions for Network:Wireless

I can't get any wireless signal in my area/room.

If your computer cannot 'see' or detect the "usd" or "usdsecure" wireless signal, or if your computer detects a signal that does not contain "usd" as part of the Wireless ID (SSID) please contact the ITS Help Desk at (619) 260-7900 to troubleshoot the issue.  The Help Desk will set up an appointment to come to your area/room and verify whether the problem is with the wireless signal or wall port.


Is there wireless network access on campus?

Yes! Wireless access is available campus wide.  We have three different wireless network names, or SSIDs, each with a different purpose.

Current students, staff, and faculty who use the wireless often are encouraged to connect to 'usdsecure'. This network provides the most security and will save your login information to speed up connecting to the network.  To configure your computer for 'usdsecure', you can run our SecureConnect tool found at http://www.sandiego.edu/its/helpdesk/wirelessaddon.

 

If you use the wireless rarely, or are unable to install the SecureConnect tool, current students, staff and faculty can connect to 'usd'.  You will need a MySanDiego username and password to access the 'usd' wireless network. Please be aware that if you disconnect from the wireless network, turn your computer off or put it into sleep mode, you will need to log back into the Aruba Wireless Network with your MySanDiego username and password.

 

Finally, guests and alumni can connect to the 'usdguest' network.  To use this network, users must pay a minimal fee ($5 for a day, $15 a week, or $30 a month) with a valid credit card.


How do I manually configure my device for 'usdsecure'?

USD provides a secure wireless network named 'usdsecure' that keeps users from having to log in each time.  ITS provides a tool to automatically configure your Windows or Mac to log in at http://www.sandiego.edu/its/helpdesk/wirelessaddon

 

If you have a computer or device that is not supported by that tool, it is sometimes possible to manually configure your computer to securely log in to 'usdsecure'.  While the ITS Help Desk will provide what help we can, we cannot guarantee that all devices will be able to use these manual settings.

Encryption: WPA Enterprise

Allow 802.1x Authentication

Outer Authentication: TTLS or Tunneled TLS

Can I use Apple Airplay on campus?

Unfortunately the technology that Airplay uses to communicate between iPads and Apple TVs is what is called a “multicast traffic” which essentially blasts out its location to all computers that are listening for that type of traffic. The problem is that since a single network segment can only handle upwards of 254 addresses that means only 254 computers could theoretically be on the network at once. Our network is set up in such a way that there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 wireless network segments to allow all wireless devices to be able to access our network. The type of “multicast traffic” that Airplay uses can’t technologically cross between these network segments without causing so much traffic that it could reduce the wireless network to a crawl. If the airplay device and your iPad happen to be in the same network segment (1 in 30 chance) then Airplay will actually work on campus. However there is no way to guarantee that they will be on the same network.

We will continue to evaluate this, and if there comes a time when we can technologically implement this without crashing the wireless network we will certainly be looking to implement this in classrooms and presentation rooms. This is not just a USD issue, but one in which any enterprise network faces when looking to implement Airplay capability.
