Frequently Asked Questions for Network:VPN
Problem:
After upgrading to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), users are unable to connect to the VPN (eGate). An error dialog will pop up that says, "Failed to open Network Connect". An additional dialog may pop up that says, "Network Connect cannot establish a secure session."
Solution:
The permissions on the folder are not set correctly. Correcting the problem requires opening Terminal to issue the Unix sudo command. The sudo command will require an administrator password. Generally, the owner of the computer will have administrator priveleges and can use their own password.
- Open Terminal. Terminal can be found under the Utilities folder within the Applications folder.
- In Terminal, type the following commands exactly as they are shown below. You may paste them in directly from these instructions. The first command will ask for the administrator password as outlined above.
sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/juniper/nc/6.4.0/
sudo mkdir '/Applications/Network Connect.app/Contents/Frameworks'
You may quit the Terminal application after entering these commands.
Once the above steps have been completed, you should be able to login to the eGate VPN normally.

If you use Advance/BSR both at USD and at home with our VPN, you might experience slow speeds, even if other applications and downloads are fast.
To make sure that all users have the newest version of Advance, ITS installs and manages one copy of the software on a Network Drive. This works well while on campus, where you have a fast connection from your computer to the drive that contains the software. However, users who take their computer home and use Advance remotely might experience slow speeds running the program over VPN. In these cases, a Desktop Technician can install the software locally on your computer to speed up performance.
If you are affected by this problem, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 619-260-7900 or by email at helpdesk@sandiego.edu to request this installation.
