Student Technology Assistants, under the guidance of experienced Information Technology Services employees, provide consulting, support and service to a faculty member who has been approved to proceed with a technology based project over the course of one semester.

What are the benefits to the student?

    • Gain valuable experience working on a challenging project with a faculty member.
    • Get paid to enhance or learn new technology skills.
    • Gain knowledge and skills that will carry through coursework to the workplace.
    • Learn valuable consulting skills including project and time management.

What are the responsibilities of a Student Technology Assistant?

    • Assist a faculty member in the development of electronic instructional resources and integration of instructional technologies into their courses.
    • Meet with and update faculty member and Program Supervisor on a regular basis as to project status.
    • Complete assigned tasks as agreed upon with the faculty member.
    • Provide feedback on the program via the Program Evaluation form.

 

What are the requirements to become a Student Technology Assistant?

 

Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.  In order to be eligible for consideration, as well as to ensure continued participation, STAs must meet the following minimum criteria:

    • Be an undergraduate student
    • Maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA
    • Work 12 hours per week, including participation in required trainings and meetings
    • Good communication and time management skills
    • Enjoy helping others
    • Comfortable working with a faculty member
    • Must be able to check and respond to e-mail frequently
    • Windows and/or Macintosh experience

What types of projects will Student Technology Assistants work on?

    • WebCT course development
    • creation of interactive learning modules including blogs, discussion boards, wikis, etc.
    • course web site development
    • audio and video editing (iMovie, Final Cut Pro)
    • basic animation (Flash, Quicktime)
    • conversion of transparencies and slides to digital formats for PowerPoint or web presentations
    • Create on-demand lectures and tutorials using Captivate

What happens once a student submits an application to be a Student Technology Assistant?

All applicants will be contacted by a Program Supervisor to determine eligibility for the program. Upon acceptance to the program, an initial meeting with the faculty member, Program Supervisor and student will be scheduled to complete the Project Design Agreement.
