Vienna

vienna

Beautifully situated on the river Danube at the edge of the majestic Austrian Alps, Vienna has been an important crossroads since the time of the Romans. It has preserved the best of its history and culture while opening itself up to contemporary challenges, both as the capital of a member state of the European Union and the most important gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. Vienna's social and cultural life is as rich and lively now as it was centuries ago.

Academic Program
This program is offered in association with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) whose Vienna Center is situated in the Palais Corbelli, an elegant, 18th century palace in the heart of Vienna. The extensive curriculum includes courses in both English and German, and offers qualified students the opportunity to take courses at local institutions such as the Universität Wien, the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien, and Konservatorium der Stadt Wien (Vienna Conservatory of Music). The latter option, however, may be available to academic year students only due to the discrepancies between the U.S. and European academic calendars. Students are expected to enroll in a German language course and four other courses.

Eligibility, Applications, and Deadlines
To be considered for the program, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. They must also have attained junior standing and completed the equivalent of two college semesters of German language studies prior to participation. Selection for the program is based on a written application and a review of transcripts (to be submitted with the application form). Preliminary applications are available in Founders Hall, Room 106 or can be downloaded by clicking on "Applications/Forms" on the toolbar to the left. Deadlines for applications are generally in late September and late February for participation in the following semester.

Living Arrangements
Students are housed in private residences throughout the city, either in independent apartments, in apartments shared with an Austrian resident-owner, or in dormitories with Austrian students. Meals are the students' responsibility.

Expenses
Tuition for this program is the same as for full-time, on-campus attendance at USD and is paid directly to USD. Other program fees such as room and board are paid directly to IES. Estimates for these program fees and personal expenses can be obtained from the International Studies Abroad Office located Serra 315.
