Academic Program
USD offers the Nagoya program through an affiliation with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES). IES enrolls students directly in the Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) at Nanzan University. CJS specializes in intensive Japanese language instruction as well as Japanese studies courses taught in English. Students with advanced language skills may take seminars taught in Japanese. USD students are required to take a minimum of 15 transferable units during the semester.

Eligibility, Applications, and Deadlines
Students must first apply through the USD International Studies Abroad Office. Students must have a minimum GPA 3.0 and junior standing, and have completed a minimum of two semesters or the equivalent of college-level Japanese to be eligible to participate. Students’ disciplinary records with USD will also be reviewed during the application process.

Living Arrangements
There are three options for student housing in Nagoya. Options include homestays, privately-managed off-campus residence halls, and an on-campus international residence hall. All housing options are coordinated by the Center for Japanese Studies. The most popular choice among students is the homestay option. Students applying to live with a Japanese family should be prepared to make a sincere effort to adjust to different customs, manners, and diet, and expect longer commuting times. In the homestay arrangement, students will eat breakfast and dinner each day with their host family.

Privately managed residence halls include facilities specifically designed for students and young employees of local companies. Each residence hall is configured differently and different meal plans, but all have private rooms and shared baths.

Nanzan University runs an on-campus International residence hall where students have private bedrooms but shared bathrooms and living spaces. Because of its reputation and limited space, openings are very competitive. There is also an off-campus residence hall where students have private rooms with toilets and sinks, but showers are shared by floor. The Nanzan University residence halls do not include meal plans, and cooking space is limited.

Students are encouraged to bring their laptops with them with the appropriate documentation and insurance. Students will have access to several modern computer rooms at Nanzan University for both English and Japanese word processing and internet access. However, they will not have computer or internet access from homestays, student dormitories, or off-campus residence halls. Computers in residences simply are not as common in other countries as they are in the United States.

Expenses
Tuition for this program is the same as for full-time, on-campus attendance at USD and is paid directly to USD. Other program fees such as room and board are paid directly to Syracuse University. Estimates for these program fees and personal expenses can be obtained from the International Studies Abroad Office located Serra 315.
