Aix-en-Provence, on the main road from northern France to Italy, allows easy access to Paris, Geneva, London, and other European capitals. Both a university town and a legal center, Aix offers an intellectual environment beneficial to all students. René d’Anjou, Mirabeau, Cézanne, Zola, and Milhaud are among the natives who have left their mark on the city and its inhabitants. Music festivals, libraries, museums, churches, markets and cafés attract tourists and students alike. The Centre’s students may also take advantage of the local cinemas, restaurants, discos and sports facilities.

Academic Program
The Centre, founded in 1957 by the Institute for American Universities (IAU) under the auspices of the Université d’Aix-Marseille, is designed for American college students. It is located in a restored 17th century chapel. Courses are comparable to those offered by most liberal arts colleges in the United States with emphasis placed on European Studies, French language and French literature and the fine arts. Students enroll in a minimum of two French-taught courses during the semester. Students are required to take French language as one of these courses. Students may also take classes at the Université d’Aix-Marseille during the spring semester if they are proficient in French. The fall semester runs from September to mid-December; the spring semester from mid-January through May.

Eligibility, Applications, and Deadlines
Students with a minimum GPA of 2.75 are eligible to apply to participate during their sophomore or junior year, with the further condition that they must have completed a minimum of two semesters of college-level study in French or the equivalent before the time of their participation. Selection for the program is based on a written application and a review of transcripts. Preliminary applications are available in Founders Hall, Room 106 or can be downloaded by clicking on "Applications/Forms" on the toolbar to the left. Deadlines for applications are generally in late September and late February for participation in the following semester.

Living Arrangements
Students live off campus, with French hosts.

Expenses
Tuition for this program is the same as for full-time, on-campus attendance at USD and is paid directly to USD. Other program fees such as room and board are paid directly to IAU.
