USD Programs

USD students may apply for a variety of study abroad programs affiliated with the University. USD grants academic credit and grades for the programs found on this web site. To ensure the proper recording of units, USD students may not enroll independently, or through another institution, in a USD-affiliated program.

Eligibility

Students who wish to study abroad on a USD-affiliated program must meet program requirements including: grade point average, class standing, language, and area of study. Students must take a minimum of 15 units while participating in the program. In most cases, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply (see specific program requirements) and students must have completed a minimum of 40 units before departure. Under extreme circumstances, exceptions may be made for freshman and/or seniors. Students placed on academic probation and those having a deficiency notice at midterm, will be disqualified, regardless of expenses incurred. Students may study abroad for a maximum of one academic year; however, to satisfy the requirements for a degree, students must earn the final 30 units of credit at the University of San Diego campus.

Costs & Financial Aid

Tuition for the affiliated programs is paid directly to USD and is equivalent to the USD tuition rate for full-time students. Tuition must be paid in full to USD ten days prior to program start date. The USD tuition installment plan is NOT available for study abroad. Note: Tuition remission may not be used for USD affiliated semester programs. All other fees are charged by and paid directly to the sponsoring institution. The USD-affiliated and USD-sponsored programs listed on this site are considered extensions of the University's academic curriculum. Financial aid, therefore, is available to eligible students for one semester of approved study abroad in a USD-affiliated program. Summer program aid is also available in the form of loans only. Some fees incurred by the sponsoring institution may not be covered by USD financial assistance. In some cases the application for financial aid may be due before the study abroad application. Therefore it is highly recommended that students plan carefully and submit both program and financial aid applications early when necessary. A financial aid counselor can help those students who wish to study at a USD-affiliated program for a full year to determine how much of their total award may be used to cover the additional costs (USD-funded aid is not available for a second semester). For more information, consult the Office of Financial Aid Services (Hughes Administration Center, Room 314, (619) 260-4514.

Scholarships

Most overseas scholarships, such as Fulbright and Marshall grants, are available for graduate study or research only, and all require careful advance planning. Students interested in such programs should contact the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences (Founders hall, Room 114). There are a few scholarships available for undergraduate study abroad, such as the Rotary International Foundation scholarships and the Del Amo grants for summer study in Spain. In addition, some of USD's affiliated programs offer limited financial aid.  Students are encouraged to inquire about the opportunities. Note: Tuition remission may not be used for USD affiliated semester programs.

Faculty

Depending on the individual program, instructors may include foreign nationals from institutions in the host countries, professors from the University of San Diego, or professors from other American colleges and Universities.
