Programs for International Students

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) supports programming and events designed to enrich the USD experience of our international students and scholars and provide leadership opportunities for international students.  The following three areas represent key elements of our international student and scholar programming.

OISS Programs

  • Workshops for faculty, staff, and students.  Topics include:
    • Catering to the needs of international students
    • Working visas and employment in the United States
    • Adapting your international resume and cover letter
    • Optional Practical Training
    • International Academic Success Workshop - collaboration with Center for Student Success and College of Arts and Sciences
    • Be Safe International Student Wellness Training - collaboration with Center for Health and Wellness Promotion
  • Celebration of cultural holidays, including: Eid, Diwali, American Halloween, Chinese New Year
  • Customized training for Resident Assistants on "Working with International Students"
  • International Parent Welcome and Orientation - collaboration with Parent Relations
  • Torrey Pines State Beach hike

International Student Organization (ISO)

  • Weekly coffee hour events
  • Monthly international dinners
  • International Expo and Cultural Fashion Show
  • International Holiday Dinner

International Orientation Team

Student leaders who assist with International Student Orientation.

  • Coordinate small group discussions
  • Lead interactive campus tours
  • Provide student-to-student academic advising
  • Plan and implement International Student Orientation events, including:
    • New International Student, Scholar, and Family Dinner
    • Harbor Cruise
    • San Diego Neighborhood Tour
    • Graduate International Student Mixer

International Buddy Program (IBP)

  • Student mentor program matching domestic study abroad returnees with incoming international exchange students
  • Allows domestic students to remain connected to their study abroad experience
  • Provides opportunities for classic San Diego experiences including:
    • San Diego Zoo
    • Kayaking, hiking and other outdoor activities
    • Beach bonfire with s’mores
