Description of Project/Purpose of Travel
Dr. Thomas Barton is completing research for his work entitled Contested Treasure- the Jews of Tortosa through the fourteenth century. The research explores the mechanics by which Catholic Iberian society coexisted with and benefited from non-Christians during the medieval period, an extremely fruitful period in the development of Catholic identity and the Catholic intellectual tradition. It focuses on the town of Tortosa, ruled by noble and ecclesiastical lords until finally falling under royal authority at the turn of the fourteenth century.
