Dr. Aker will be presenting her paper entitled “Gender Platforms for Conflict Transformation” at the IPSA’s XX11nd World Congress of Political Science: Reshaping Power, Shifting Boundaries. She is also co-chair on the panel where this paper will be given “Transforming Identities: Methods and Processes For Conflict Transformation” and which has been organized by the Life & Peace Institute in Uppsala, Sweden.

Dr. Azaransku wiill research how churches in Ghana contribute to the global environmental justice movement. The majority of the world’s Christians live in the global south and the tradition is growing at its fastest rate in Africa. Indeed, scholars point to African Christianity as the future of the tradition.

Dr. Cordy-Collins will be researching for her paper entitiled: “Scotland’s Stone Circles and Standing Stones.” The purpose of the travel is to locate and digitally catalogue Scotland’s large stone constructions from the Neolithic Period (ca. 4500 - 2500 BC), throughout the Highlands, Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkneys, and Shetlands.

Description of Project/Purpose of Travel

Dr. Hogan will present at two academic conferences in Valladolid and Santander, Spain. These conferences will allow her to meet, exchange ideas, and gain feedback from Spanish and international scholars of Spain. She will also internationalize my research by speaking with the director of the National Association for Those Affected by Irregular Adoptions (ANADIR) for a transatlantic and comparative expansion of her research on the political use of children.

Description of Project/Purpose of Travel

Dr. Jacobitz will continue an ongoing research collaboration with Dr. Kai Schneider at the Aix-Marseille University. They will perform a data analysis using results from simulations of homogeneous turbulence with shear and rotation, prepare a conference presentation, and write a journal article on their findings. He also plans to attend selected sessions of the CEMRACS 2012 research session on Numerical Methods and Algorithms for High Performance Computing. This event is organized by the French Society of Applied and Industrial Mechanics and held in Luminy, France from July 23 to August 24, 2012.

Dr. Petersen will travel to Mexico City in July 2012 to conduct on-site research to expand a conference presentation into an article. This project includes an analysis of the physical space of area surrounding the Plaza de tres culturas in Mexico City, the site of a student massacre by the military in 1968.

Description of Project/Purpose of Travel

Dr. Ruiz will travel to Valladolid and Alicante (Spain) where Juan Manuel (1282-1348) lived, to look at images of that period in art and architecture that represent the Virgin Mary. She intends to incorporate these examples in her paper “Juan Manuel’s Daring: Defending the Assumption of the Virgin Mary,” which analyzes the author’s Treatise, Tractado de la Asunción de la Virgen María, which has been studied very little up to now. She has also been invited to present a paper at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona for the Seminario de Estudios Medievales y Renacentistas Association (SEMYR).

The theme for this year’s conference is “Democratization, Marketization, and the Third Sector.” The conference will bring together scholars from 68 countries to share their comparative approaches and multidisciplinary knowledge about civil society, philanthropy, and the nongovernmental sector.

Allison Wiese will travel to Mexico City in July, 2012 to inaugurate a collaborative sculptural project with Mexican sculptor Edgar Orlaineta. An International Opportunity Grant will allow her to kick off a process of shared exploration, research, dialogue and the eventual creation of a series of site-specific collaborative artworks that erase our individual authorship in an attempt to fuse, in a very literal way, our geographic, social and political identities.
