Through
a variety of experiences, individuals develop a personal definition
of what marriage is, as well as accompanying values regarding marriage.
Some individuals, for example, see marriage as primarily a legal
or social institution. Others, however, emphasize the spiritual
nature of marriage. Some Protestant denominations label marriage
as a covenant, while Catholics speak of marriage as a sacrament.
Clearly, our religious backgrounds can strongly influence our views
and values around marriage. It is important, therefore, that interchurch
couples take time to explore the meaning that each gives to marriage,
particularly in relationship to their spiritual or religious beliefs.
The goal of this unit is to help you explore the meaning that you
and your partner give to marriage, and hopefully help you arrive
at a shared meaning.
