This Weekend at USD (Oct. 9-11)

cropperseries-photoThe following events take place on and off campus, beginning Thursday and throughout the weekend. Many are free or have a nominal charge (indicated).

Friday, Oct. 9

Fridays in the Valley Block Party: The Brothers and Sisters United (BSU) student organization hosts this Friday’s weekly social gathering for all students, staff, faculty and alumni. There will be food, games, free yoga and hip hop class offerings. Several organizations will have booths at the event, which runs from 4-7 p.m. USD Radio will provide music.

PRIDE Dance: The USD student organization PRIDE will host a dance from 8-11 p.m. in the third floor courtyard of the Student Life Pavilion. Music, food and drinks will be provided.

Cropper Writers Series: Bharati Mukherjee (pictured, above right), author of The Middleman and Other Stories, which won the 1988 National Book Critics Circle Award, will speak at 7 p.m. in the IPJ Theater. Mukherjee’s appearance is the kickoff event for the annual program held in memory of Lindsay J. Cropper, a USD alumna.

Men’s Soccer: USD at Portland, 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $5-$14.

Concert: Angelus Sacred Music Concert Series features a solo organ recital by Los Angeles-based artist Andrea Anderson. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in Founders Chapel. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors, USD faculty, staff and alumni and $8 for students with valid ID.

Movie Night: A free film screening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be shown in the Student Life Pavilion’s Plaza Mayor beginning at 9 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 10

Surfing Lessons: The Experiential Education and Adventure Center is hosting a basic surf instruction day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those interested should meet at the center, located in the Hahn University Center room 136, at 8 a.m. The cost is $30 for USD ID cardholders (students, faculty, staff, alumni) and $40 for the general public. Equipment provided.

Cross Country: USD men’s and women’s teams compete in the UC San Diego Invitational on the UCSD campus in La Jolla. The women’s race is at 9 a.m., followed by the men’s race at 10 a.m.

Football: USD at Valparaiso, 11 a.m. (PDT). Listen to the Pioneer Football League game on San Diego 1700 AM radio (pre-game coverage at 10:40 a.m.) or listen to the audio broadcast online.

Women’s Volleyball: Santa Clara at USD, Jenny Craig Pavilion, 1 p.m. This West Coast Conference match for the Toreros is also a “Dig Pink” match to promote Breast Cancer awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. Three three pink-and-white volleyballs used in Saturday’s match will be autographed by each USD team member and auctioned off.

Saturday Night Live: Tiffany Ya will perform a free concert from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Student Life Pavilion’s Plaza Mayor.

Sunday, Oct. 11

Farmer’s Market: The Experiential Education and Adventure Center is sponsoring free transportation to take USD students to the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (619) 260-4709.

Men’s Soccer: USD at Gonzaga, Spokane, Wash., 1 p.m. General admission tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors (65-up) and children (12-under).

Women’s Soccer: Santa Clara at USD, Torero Stadium, 1 p.m.

Mass: USD’s Founders Chapel offers mass services at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
