Ashley Cobb, a 2010 University of San Diego graduate, is a recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Medicine Awards from the American Medical Association.
Cobb, who majored in biochemistry and completed USD’s Honors Program, is now a third-year medical student pursuing a career in primary care, which she hopes to integrate with her interests in global health and public service.
After graduating from USD, Cobb worked with AmeriCorps in an after-school program for at-risk youth and coordinated a community health fair for migrant farm workers. Currently a medical student at Mayo Medical School, she volunteers extensively in her community, serving as a mentor for local adolescents. She has also conducted a qualitative study in Uganda and organized a successful fundraiser for people in the Philippines.
Cobb was one of 15 standouts nationally to receive her specific AMA award. As a result, all recipients will receive special training to develop their skills as future leaders in community affairs and organized medicine.
She will attend University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to get her Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health next year.
