At the annual Undergraduate Honors Convocation, USD President Mary Lyons noted the many present who will graduate this spring. “You are the greatest gift we can give to our world,” she said.
The event began with 42 students recognized for completing USD’s Honors Program. Those included Jessica Gomes who received the Anne Catherine Swanke Award for Exceptional Contributions to the Honors Program and the university.
Diana Velazquez received the award for Community Service Learning Scholar. Eirene Rocha was recognized as the 2013 Student Employee of the Year.
Associated Students Vice President Yasamin Mahallaty and President Morgan Schwanke each received the Dr. Thomas J. Cosgrove Award for Outstanding Service in Student Government.
Toni DeGuire and Alison Mackey were honored for Outstanding Service in Official University-Sponsored Activity while Marc Gonzales and James Wykowski were recognized for Outstanding Contribution to the Entire Campus Through Involvement.
Jessica Change received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Multicultural Awareness and Understanding and Kathryn Johnson was recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Residential Life.
The Chet Pagni Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service went to Michelle Padilla and Jessica McCarthy received the St. Catherine Medal.
Both Trevor Crowell and Caroline Kershner were recognized as recipients of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship.
Other students from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, Engineering Programs and School of Leadership and Educations Sciences were honored for earning 4.0 grade point averages, departmental honors and special awards, as well as membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Gamma Pi, Mortar Board, and other honors societies and Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
Finally, two USD faculty members each received a long round of applause from their colleagues and grateful students. Political Science Professor Del Dickson received the Patrick F. Drinan Award for Distinguished Service and Associate Professor of English and Ethnic Studies Gail Perez was awarded the Davies Award for Teaching Excellence.
