The premier Spring regatta on the West Coast returns this weekend, April 6 and 7, when the 40th San Diego Crew Classic takes place at Mission Bay. The Crew Classic, which features many of the nation’s top junior, collegiate and masters teams, features two days of races that begin at 7:20 a.m. each day.
The University of San Diego’s men and women’s rowing programs, coached by Brooks Dagman and Kim Cupini, respectively, will have several athletes competing both days. There will also be three alumni teams — two women entries and one men’s team — vying in special races on Sunday afternoon. It will be an especially important event for the women’s program, which is the three-time defending West Coast Conference team champion, as a few of their WCC competitors will be competing this weekend.
This year’s Crew Classic, in addition to 2013 being its 40th year, marks USD’s 35th year as a program. The Crew Classic brings the USD rowing community together. To facilitate this camaraderie, the programs are hosting three events this weekend. There’s an on-campus reception Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m. in USD’s Warren Hospitality Suite within the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Parents, alumni and friends are invited to attend. On Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m., Offshore Tavern and Grill, 2253 Morena Blvd., will be the place for USD attendees to gather after the first race day. On Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Torero fans can visit the USD tent area, enjoy a barbecue meal and hang out with Torero alumni, parents and other fans and root on the USD competitors. For more information, call (619) 260-5917.
