The 2012 USD Wine Classic raised more than $50,000 to support scholarship assistance for current University of San Diego students.
The July 22 event, which was blessed by a traditional summer San Diego weather day and held at the scenic Garden of the Sea behind the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, delivered for the 700 people in attendance.
“What makes the USD Wine Classic so great is that it was created by alumni, it featured more than 30 wineries, many with USD alumni and family connections, and all proceeds go to fund much-needed scholarships for deserving USD students,” said USD Alumni Relations Director Charles Bass. “And, it’s a lot of fun!”
Thirty-two wineries from all over California and a few from Mexico provided delicious wine samples. Attendees paired their wine with a diverse food menu specially prepared by USD Catering. “Road to Robles,” a pre-Wine Classic event in which Peachy Canyon Winery vintner Doug Beckett ’75 (MEd) discussed the art of blind wine tasting, and a silent auction during the Wine Classic were also highlights.
Funds from this year’s event brought the Wine Classic’s contribution to more than $150,000 toward the USD Alumni Association’s initial goal of generating $1 million for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund was established in 2006 by USD alumni to provide scholarships for USD students, nearly 70 percent of who receive some form of financial aid.
“I sincerely appreciate and acknowledge the impact donors [and alumni] are having on the lives of current USD students,” said Shannon Schumacher ’14. “Your support encourages me to continue my efforts to create positive change during and after my time at USD.”
“This university is full of traditions and I think the Wine Classic is a new one that will continue and, eventually, will be an old tradition,” said USD Wine Classic Committee Chairperson Heather Manly (’02, ’05) said. “It’s one that I think alumni, faculty, staff and the San Diego community can all share and enjoy together.”
Next year’s USD Wine Classic, the fifth annual, is scheduled for Sunday, July 14, 2013.
