Summer Festival Brings Music to USD Campus

Friday, June 22, 2012

The University of San Diego campus will be a great place to hear the sounds of music, beginning this Sunday, June 24, and again July 1-7.

Angela Yeung, PhD, associate professor of music at USD, runs the seventh annual Summer Chamber Music Festival, sponsored by College of Arts and Sciences and the Greater San Diego Music Coterie. The festival, which draws musicians from California and around the world, welcomes the USD community and the public to attend concerts at venues such as Camino Hall’s Shiley Theatre, La Gran Terraza Restaurant and Founders Hall’s French Parlor.

A special pre-festival concert takes place at 2 p.m., June 24, as the Tijuana Camerata, a professional chamber ensemble from Tijuana, Mexico performs under the direction of Yeung (pictured, right) in Shiley Theatre. Works include Antonio Salieri’s “Sinfonia Veneziana”; Antonin Reichenauer’s “Concerto for Oboe and Bassoon”; and a chamber version of Claude Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” arranged by Arnold Schoenberg.

The USD festival performances by attendees are: July 1, 2 p.m., Shiley Theatre: Opening Faculty Concert (tickets required); July 2, 3, 5 and 6, 12:15 p.m., La Gran Terraza (free admission with lunch purchase); July 5, 7:30 p.m., French Parlor: Participants Evening Concert (tickets required); and two shows on Saturday, July 7, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Shiley Theatre: Participants Final Concert (tickets required).

Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 students, seniors, and USD faculty/staff/alumni.  There is a $4 ticket discount off the total purchase for the July 7 concerts if the 2 p.m. tickets are obtained at the same time as the 11 a.m. concert.

As a show of community support, three Linda Vista-area eateries are providing a 10 percent discount to all customers and will donate 10 percent to the festival from June 24 to July 8. The eateries are: Ryan’s Café, 5201 Linda Vista Rd., #103; Valencia’s Mexican and Seafood, 5201 Linda Vista Rd., #102; and Rocking Tanuki, 6110 Friars Rd., #101. Discount vouchers, available at USD and at the respective restaurants, are required to receive the discount and for the festival donation to count. Customers must mention the USD Summer Chamber Music Festival and present the voucher prior to ordering.
