Cropper Writers Event Spotlights USD’s Own

Thursday, February 17, 2011

The University of San Diego welcomes a pair of talented and creative writers who are very familiar with the institution as the first spring event of the 2010-11 Lindsay J. Cropper Writers Lecture Series takes place on Friday, Feb. 18.

David Philip Mullins, who earned degrees in English and philosophy in 1996 from USD, and Deniz Perin (pictured, left), a poet and lecturer in the English Department at USD, will speak about their respective work and read excerpts to engage the audience. Friday’s event begins at 7 p.m. and will take place in the Hahn University Center’s Forum rooms A and B.

“This is a great opportunity for us to show others the kind work that people with a USD connection are doing,” said Jericho Brown, PhD, an accomplished poet as well as an assistant professor of English at USD who selects the speakers for the Cropper Lecture Series.

Mullins is the author of Greetings from Below, a collection of short stories. The book won both the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction and the international Walter Scott Prize for Short Stories. Some of the stories within the book have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Mullins, who is also a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, has taught at the University of Iowa and University of Nebraska at Omaha, and is currently an assistant professor of creative writing at Creighton University.

Perin, who received an MFA in poetry from San Diego State University in 2007, is known best for her writing and translation work that has appeared in literary journals. She was recently selected as a Lannan Foundation fellow and is a past recipient of the Anna Akhmatova Fellowship for Young Translators. One of her most recent published works is Book of the Edge, her translation from the Turkish of Ece Temelkuran’s poetry collection, in July 2010 by BOA Editions, which is part of the Lannan Translations Selection Series.

This is the third Cropper Lecture Series event during the 2010-11 academic year. The next one, featuring writers David Kirby and Piotr Florczyk, will be held Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in UC Forums A and B.
