Creating Dialogue on Diversity and Social Responsibility Workshop
Center for Community Service-Learning and Center for Educational Excellence present a two-day faculty and staff development workshop

Creating Dialogue on Diversity
January 21, 2009
8:30a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Kroc IPJ Rooms H-I

This day's interactive sessions explore the research, and model the approach to creating "dialogue-to-change." La Vonne Cornell-Swanson, Interim Director of the Office of Professional and Instructional Development for University of Wisconsin System Administration, will present her work with reflection circles. Reflection circles are a method of generating open dialogue on sensitive topics such as white privilege and racism and making students' thinking on these topics visible. The facilitator will lay the foundation for the session by sharing the results of a research project that was designed to study the effectiveness of diversity reflection circles in the classroom environment. Participants will be provided with materials and training on how to facilitate the diversity reflection circles in classroom and educational program settings.

Creating Dialogue on Social Responsibility
January 22, 2009
8:30a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Kroc IPJ Rooms H-I

During this session University of San Diego professors Sandra Sgoutas-Emch (Psychology) and Judy Liu (Sociology) share findings from their Carnegie Foundation/Campus Compact grant concerning civic and social responsibility. The session will draw on the previous day's learning to explore how reflection circles can help communities organize and connect public dialogue to real solutions to social and civic issues. A panel of faculty will share how their courses have fostered civic engagement among students and discuss how courses can be designed to articulate learning goals, activities, assignments, and assess outcomes. Following the discussion participants will engage in an actual diversity reflection circle dialogue and explore how this method can enhance community service-learning experiences.
