Understanding children must be physically and mentally healthy to learn and grow in and outside of the school day, researchers and educational leaders from the IIL specialize in fostering the health and well being of today’s 21
st Century learners. Through an integrated approach combining research, policy, and practice, the Health and Wellness division of the IIL focuses on research-based strategies that support the physical, mental, social-emotional, and subsequently the academic well being of the whole child.

Mission Statement

Under the auspice of the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Learning at the University of San Diego, the mission of the Health and Wellness Initiative is to foster an awareness of holistic education emphasizing the importance of supporting students’ physical and mental health and well-being both within school and the surrounding community to maximize students’ educational experiences.

About Us

Irwin and Joan Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Learning  researchers and educational experts have been involved in health and wellness research and reform efforts since 2012. One of the first university-based research centers studying the impact of a district-wide yoga program in the Encinitas Union School District (could put link EUSD wellness or to court case coverage), ILL has been at the forefront of health and wellness school reform studying and supporting the implementation of health and wellness programs and initiatives throughout the United States.

Services

Guided by the ASCD and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model, the Health and Wellness Initiative engages with researchers, practitioners policymakers and community stakeholders to innovate the educational community by emphasizing the holistic well being of the students served.  

Research & Evaluation:

  • Conduct short term or longitudinal qualitative and quantitative research determining the effectiveness of wellness efforts including social emotional learning experiences, farm to school initiatives, character education programs, yoga and/or mindfulness practices, or school-based health interventions.

  • Evaluate the impact of current programs or initiatives related to student wellness in order to identify best practices or recommendations to strengthen program impact.

Leadership & Professional Learning:

  • The School and Community Wellness Initiative engages with public, private, and charter educational entities striving to better support the health and wellness of students within their school community. Utilizing the Professional Learning expertise of the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Learning at the University of San Diego, services include consultation to implement effective wellness opportunities as well as professional learning services to strengthen a school or district’s capacity to support the physical and mental wellness of the students they serve.
